Quitting Mac Mail

My mac (10.3.9) mail starts indexing then stalls without completing this task. When I try to delete unwanted e mails, the programme won't let me quit without force quitting which means that the e mails never disappear. Any suggestions?

Just a thought, but this is probably the wrong forum

Try deleting the Mail preferences named com.apple.mail.plist although this will lose your account settings. Maybe remove this file from the Preference folder to your desktop rather than deleting it straight off. That way, if this does nothing to solve your problem, you can put it back in that folder (replacing the new one) to recover your old settings.
