I read a short story the other day and the person used a saying that I had seen before but can't seem to place where.

The saying was "Mean enough to chew nails, and pissed off because he didn't have any."

    any clue?

Closest I can come is "mad enough to chew nails and spit tacks", which is a folk saying and seems to have been around for quite some time.

Sounds like what you read was an original twist on that.

I have seen that variation as well. Spit bullets, spit tacks, crap razor blades (ouch!)

The addledness of my memory suggests the quote was from the 80's.

"mad enough to chew nails and crap razor blades"

    Wow. That is seriously angry.

I'll see if I can track down that quote (in the original post). No promises, but I'll look around!
