    Innovative Apple

    Sep 05, 03 | 8:09 am — By Amy Percival

Since 1999, Apple has increased spending in research and development by 42%. R&D spending for 2003 is expected to reach almost $500 million in 2003, with half of that figure invested in hardware development. 29 percent is expected to be spent on software and 22 percent on applications, said Apple's CFO, Fred Anderson at the 2003 Technology Conference. In comparison, Microsoft is expected to spend over six billion dollars on research and development this year.

How is it possible for Microsoft to spend 12 times as much money in R&D, and yet Apple is light years ahead in terms of innovation?

apple is a small company (comp to M$) and can design for the niche market

and being smaller can move in new directions faster.

Its not a matter of how much money is being spent here - given M$'s large monopoly of the market you'd imagine that they'd have more 'innovation'.

Kudos for Apple on getting the better of M$ in this regard. I thinks its more of a philosophical thing than anything else. M$ wants to tell you what you need while Apple gives you what you need.

remember microsoft buys those that innovate, they really dont themselves. just keep buying what they need or want.

If a screensaver inside of Microsoft Word does not count as innovation, I don't know what its called.

Well, its not how much you spend its how you use it. While Microsoft have spent billions , they've spent it on the wrong things. Apple has spent well and put the R&D to use.
