...each triplet is different

ie one of 3x4GB plus another of 3x1GB (installed in the slots as described in the manual)

My question is will this still operate in triple channel, or must both triplets be identical?

This is on a brand new 2010 8-core. I ordered the 4GB third party but I'm wondering if I can still make good use of the now spare 1GB sticks it came with.

It will be used for professional graphics, video and 3D equally and best overall performance is the aim. I actually have 6x1GB going spare from the stock machine, but I assume it would be silly to put it all in (right?).

Both will work in triple channel.

I'd use it with 3x4GB and 3x1GB and see what sort of memory usage you have. Then decide if you want to add more and in what capacities.
