In the words of a phrase popular when Reagan was president...gag me with a spoon!

Sure Reagan was happy. He didn't know what was going on. Like our current Fearless Leader, he didn't like to read. Sure he "presented things nicely." But a saying about Hollywood (in which Reagan was an actor) also applies to Reagan the president: When you scrap off all the phony tinsel on top, you'll see the real tinsel underneath.

Reagan is now their model for the ideal president, huh? "Fighting for hardworking Americans"? Reagan? The union-buster? The corporate tool?

Reagan, who expanded government and increased the national debt to then-unheard of levels? Reagan, the enemy of environmentalists?

Are they kidding?? Or are they just self-destructive?

Think back, back... who were the Republican presidents before and after Reagan? George "read my lips" Bush, Gerald "soporific" Ford, and Richard "I am not a crook" Nixon. So who are Republicans going to use as nostalgic touchstone --Eisenhower?

Weren't the people coming up with this plan *alive* in the 80's? And of voting age or close to?

Man, the selective memory in Washington is scary.

In all seriousness -- yes, that's the last good Republican president they'd be able to point to.

But, Reagan was so bad he scared the Ruskies into surrendering, while inventing the PC, and winning the war on drugs.

    Reagan was awesome.

Actually Reagan was the only president that around 90% of the Democrats really liked!

when reagan ripped all the electoral votes back in the 1984 election sans MN, you definitely know that 90% democrats loved him back then.

that doesn't follow. for most states, electoral votes are all or nothing. 50.1% will get you all the votes, but it doesn't mean that > 50.1% of the populace supports you.

    Contras had it good, too.

But he didn't say 50.1%, he said 90%

Maybe you don't understand the meaning of the word "definitely".

Sorry but it doesn't matter what the popular vote was, 90% of the electoral college has never been equalled ever not even by the populist Clinton. Ironically most of the Democrats I talk with really like Reagan so that's from personal experience.

Yes. I just watched it again. One of the most remarkable speeches given by an elected leader at any time or place. Remarkable because he honestly told the truth.

The Republican party needs more Eisenhower Republicans. I hate the right, and I hate the Republican Party, but Eisenhower was a reasonable man, and that's usually enough to avoid disaster.

Good ol' Romney, such an idiot. I really wish he would go back to Utah and lead some other olympics. He has done a whole bunch of crap in this state.

Not true, Alf Landon managed to lose to Franklin Roosevelt under similar circumstances, gaining only 13 electoral college votes. Furthemore, Reagan secured only 58.8% of the vote, meaning your 90% number is effectively impossible.

I think most of the reasonable people have been purged from national politics. I'm waiting for the adults to be in charge, but I'm not holding my breath.
