iPod Record stereo audio into new iPods?

I was reading on a web site that apple has enabled/disabled whatever it was that prevented high quality audio to be recorded into the ipod on the new models.
Does anyone know if this is true an if so, then I would be able to replace my digital Mini-disc recorder with a new ipod and use a stereo microphone to record lectures, bands, etc?
