Quote goes on to say "...because bands don't see a dime from record companies anyway."

This is much more a criticism of the recording industry, rather than the iTMS specifically.

Title of this thread is a little misleading.

    I agree with Flowbee

Yeah, this thread title is misleading. Also, I haven't checked the band's own website, but if they're doing this themselves, I suspect they'll get burned in the end. It probably would've been better for them to take the indie route on iTunes. :)

"HOLLYWOOD — The band best known for asking "Can we forget about the things I said when I was drunk?" is posing a more serious question. Can we forget about iTunes?"

i know we are all freaks about anything even remotely related to news about apple, but this has nothing to do with apple. a creative line by a journalist is not apple news.

Apple doesn't see a dime from selling music files anyways ;) so they're in the same boat. Just sign up with one of the many independent labels on iTMS and shut up.

Actually it does have to do with iTunes...because RCA is keeping their music on iTMS, and they WON'T see a dime from any of those sales...

Could that have something to do with MTV planning their own music download service?? Hmmm...

[Also - I should mention here that Mudbug generally does a fine job of bringing these articles to our attention. The only reason I brought up the misleading thread title in the first place was to save people the trouble of reading the article, not to criticize the original poster.]

Wonder how much it will end up costing them to host that music and sell it off of their site. Definitely something.

How bands get paid has little to do with the store that sells the music.

It appears that bands do get royalties on every CD sold (apart from music club 10 for 1 deals) Across the "majors" industry it is about 10 to 17% give or take proven accounting malpractice! I dont know what the percentage is on downloads, in theory it shouldnt be any different, but I stand corrected if necessary.

However, the bands who say they dont get a dime in royalties are undoubtedly not selling anything.

Bands who sell and say they are not earning anything from music are just neglecting to say that they have no money "in their hand" - probably because at that point in time they are still paying off the advances paid to them by the record company. Some bands, maybe lots, are getting underpaid, but no royalties appearing in their account with a record company? - highly unlikely.

Bands don't see royalties because of "recoupment" - which means the label spends money recklessly on the records and videos and then charges that money back from artist's royalties.

It's why I no longer record for Warner Brothers.
