This thread is not about any religion Justen Long gave us (yet :D), but rather for people to move their religious talk from the Justin Long thread to this one, so the original thread can stay on topic. Thank you.

To claim that your statement separating Catholicism from all other branches of Christianity as the one branch that has a distorted view is not offensive.... What makes this offensive is that you are singling out Catholicism. And it certainly is offensive.

Yes, as I pointed out, the "stains" in history have more to do with the fact that these are human organizations, and less to do with the religions in question. And you would be hard pressed to find ANY religion that doesn't have stains. Even atheism has its black eyes, so saying you're choosing atheism to dissociate yourself from these things in history is rather hypocritical of you. What you can't dissociate yourself from is humanity, and, unfortunately, humans are seriously flawed creatures, given over to senseless, emotion based, violence. Sometimes religious leaders use that fact to point the violence all in one direction, but, then again, so do secular leaders.

All we can do is try to live our lives as best we can. That can be done within a religion, or without.

Wasn't it an atheist who claimed that religion is the opiate of the masses? And didn't his disciples go on to positions of power such that tens of millions died?

Bum-rapping religious beliefs or political beliefs--or a mix of the two--because of people's misuse of those beliefs sorta misses the point of almost everything...

    Reminds me of a quote:

An idea is not responsible for the people who believe in it.

How did the Justin Long thread turn into religion?

Sorry, rather not read through it any more, it was making my head hurt.

As Ja Di jsw points out Marx's ideas have no real connection with the people who claimed they acted on his behalf,in fact even a cursory reading of Marx would teach you he would have been as horrified as the rest of us at what the Bolsheviks did.
