It is difficult to view this as not absurd

Lukas Novy can wear Pastafarian Colander in ID photo

Apparently the holy colander is revered because his noodlyness boiled for us inside it. Hence, a good Pastafarian wears it on his head as a symbol of devotion to the precepts of the CFSM.

But, it is a farce religion, a satire, not like the venerable genuine religions that are centuries old and have earned respect through age and violence. Why should a bogus religion be treated like a real one? Is this fair?

What makes pastafarianism not a religion? Is this really any more absurd than any other religion? I hope one day you are touched by his noodly appendage.

And they're not considered a farce? Half of their stuff was made up just the same and put all together make less sense than actual bogus religions.

All religions are a sham and made up and this guy is simply bringing the absurdity of religions out in the open. Come on, guys wearing robes or funny hats don't seem as absurd in these so-called "real" religions?

The CFSM lacks legitimacy because its death toll is still zero. I mean, even Scientology has at least one attributed death (and a pretty nasty one at that). How a non-murderous religion could be recognized is beyond me.

What difference does it make whether he's wearing a colander or not? You may think he looks like an idiot, but so what?

It's not disguising his appearance. You can still see his face, his hair, etc.

So as a picture ID, I don't think it's any less identifiable than if he were wearing a hat like a beret.

Personally, I could never fully trust any religion that hasn't left a well-documented paper-trail of its blood-lust in the annals of history.

Every religion is a bogus religion, if we have to treat the other religions in a certain way,*then why not this one? The other ones are obviously as fake.

But yes, it is absurd that he gets to wear a hat,*when you're not allowed to on passport photos - but not as absurd as churches being exempt of taxes.

    ----------

You're not allowed to wear a hat or a beret in photos like this, if I'm not mistaken.

Tbh, Sydde, I find it more absurd that you think some religions are more real than others, I mean what is that about? Are you a theist?

The CFSM is basically satire (though born of a serious concern), to discuss issues concerning them in a serious tone would be, well, absurd.

All religion is pretty absurd when you think about it. Sometimes I think the only way to get through to people is to show them something just as crazy and ask, "well, you don't believe in that, do you?"

During the play The Book of Mormon, one character sings a song called I Believe. It can be taken as a beautiful ode to religion and faith. Or... you can really listen to it and think, geez, people still believe in this? and then take it further: how is this different from what I believe in?

The one thing I have close to faith-like belief in is that truth is stranger than fiction. As crazy as these religions (all of them) may be, they are rather conventional in composition, not nearly strange enough to be even candidates for what they apparently claim to be.

Life is absurd (if you really think about it).

Ergo, discussing life "in a serious tone", is absurd.

I swear. I am guessing you must go down to Red Stick once a week to have dinner with Andre Codrescu. I can hear his voice narrating your life.

Nyet, Codrescu is too technophobic for me to be much of a follower, although I do find that his prose has a good beat and is easy to dance to.

And pasta's a lot of carbs. Eating enough of it will make you fat and that can kill you. :p
