Apple Remote Desktop, as it turns out, is VNC-based, and only costs as much as it does because of its custom administration support. If you just want basic remote control, any of the free VNC programs out there will work. In fact, according to this link, you can use the built-in Apple Remote Desktop software as a VNC server, so you don't have to download and install anything.

Do a search for VNC and Chicken of the VNC. If you have 10.4 running, you can activate remote control in the prefs pane. Then you need Chicken of the VNC (which is free) to control from a distance. (You also need other things, like opening ports and a static IP or IP forwarding, but that's why you need a search). That said, this all costs you nothign except a little time.
