what' the difference between verify and repair permissions?
I run 10.2.8 and am a switcher.
Verify permissions will do precicely what it says - i.e. simply verify the permissions, to ensure that all of the permissions are set correctly, repair however will actually change anything that has been found to be incorrect ! - Simple really - good luck !
but...like...that's what i'd guessed too but thought it was too obvious and then thought, why would you need to verify?? If you verified and found problems, you'd then have to repair. So it'd take twice as long.
I just don't understand why there even needs to be a verify option.
Is there any situation where you'd only want to verify?
Good question. I wish I knew
If you were very paranoid that the actual repair of permissions might screw something up, you might want to verify first to find out what the repair is actually going to do. Never heard of this happening, but I suppose it's possible.
You might also be doing diagnostics on a drive, but don't want to alter it yet--just figuring out what's up. Read-only volumes, too, maybe.
