I have to admit, I'm loving the Republican responses to Rush Limbaugh's "slut" remarks.

Mitt Romney, after first keeping silent, said, "It's not the language I would have used."

Through Michael Steel, John Boeher responded, “The speaker obviously believes the use of those words was inappropriate, as is trying to raise money off the situation,"...referring to Democratic efforts to make hay of Limbaugh's insult.

Darrell Issa answered a Democratic colleague's letter of concern by saying, “While your letter raises important concerns about these inappropriate comments and the tone of the current debate over religious freedom and Obamacare, I am struck by your clear failure to recognize your own contributions to the denigration of this discussion and attacks on people of religious faith." That's pretty good, actually. He managed to deflect with the old "So are you!" tactic, he slipped in a slur for the Affordable Care Act, and he managed to squeeze in a talking point about the pseudo-war on religion. That's talent.

Rick Santorum sloughed it off by saying: "He's being absurd, but that's you know, an entertainer can be absurd"

You gotta love it. From Santorum's variation of "boys will be boys", so Mitt Romney's extremely half-hearted response, to Issa and Boehner's spin...do these guys know how to implode, or what?

Thanks for another weapon we can use between now and November, GOP.

And good luck with the women's vote -- as well as all of us men who are sympathetic to them.

Oh -- and Rush has no standing to call someone else a slut. The man is an attention whore, and his show is the equivalent of political pornography.

...Oh, all right. That last comment of mine wasn't really appropriate.

    I apologize, pornographers.

Par for the course. Where is Sarah Palin in all this? She's so quick to play the sexist card when it's about her or her ilk.

EDIT: I hope she sues the **** out of Limbaugh.

Calling any body on this forum that word would get you banned, and rightly so.

I had to look him up, but Rush Limbaugh is exactly how I imagine Republicans Fat, White, and Ugly. A true piece of knuckle dragging, down to the lowest denominator media pundit.

Given his following, which it's self says everything you need to know about the Republicans you can see why they are playing this one very softly. It's exactly how they all think.

I don't have a link yet, but it appears advertiser Legal Zoom has dropped Limbaugh.

    EDIT:

WOW. You just nailed the Republican demographic.

He called a birth control activist a slut and a prostitute? Or was there something more I missed?

    You miss something?

Clearly, Rush Limbaugh has no knowledge on how birth control works. Pretty amazing considering he's been married, 4 times.

I'm just going to imagine most people don't listen to Rush here, myself included so I didn't really know anything about the story that this thread was about. I would have figured this was par for the course for him though. Can't say I am really surprised.

I happen to like Rush, but I think he stepped over the line with the "Slut" comment.

The thing you have to keep in mind about Rush Limbaugh is that he is primarily a radio personality. While this has the advantage of not requiring a pleasant appearance, it also has an interesting, and significant side effect:

People generally listen to his show while they are doing something else. Driving their car; doing the ironing; puttering in their garage. And so it is necessary for him to occasionally slip in some phrase that will break through the "half listening" state his audience is in.

Any understanding of Limbaugh's popularity, and present-day American Conservatism in general, probably starts with reading an almost 50 year old essay, Richard Hofstadter's "The Paranoid Style in American Politics"

The inclusion of birth control, to Limbaugh, isn't a matter of a woman's control over her own body. It becomes him (the poor fat white multimillionaire) being oppressed by the heartless Socialists into subsidizing (no matter how insignificantly) through his taxes, an activity he's doesn't get to directly participate in: ie. The law student's sex life.

I bet Romney would call her a whore instead......

What kind of response was that from Romney? Not the language he would use..... What would he have used?

The smartest thing Rick Santorum has ever said

This is the smartest thing Rick Santorum has ever said. Limbaugh has always been an entertainer masquerading as a political journalist. Everyone in Washington knows that, but, Rush's Dittoheads don't like to admit it in public, and a lot of Republicans are afraid of Rush. Now, even Rick Santorum, whose base overlaps heavily with the Dittoheads, can dismiss Rush in public as a mere entertainer.

    http://politicalhumor.about.com/od/politicalcartoons/ig/Political-Cartoons/Dittoheads.htm

That's FWU to you. Shall we pick that apart? Does Fat alone qualify, or do you have to be White, too? I particularly resent your prejudice against Ugly people. Not all of us were born with your good looks.

I was Shocked that these companies were advertising on Limbaugh's show in the first place.

You should listen to him a few times, so that you can be properly amazed at the huge number of people who find him amusing to listen to. Rush's demographic finds his humor quite clever. And they vote.

Congratulations. You're the very first person in my entire history with MacRumors to use a stereotype to describe me and actually get it right. It doesn't describe all of us, but it does describe me. Bravo.

I only wish it had been done objectively, rather than hatefully.

I don't listen to the windbag, I think he's a vile, disgusting bigot who has done the world a disservice, and I genuinely believe the world will be a better place when he keels over and dies.

That said, what radio network is he on? I can't believe he hasn't been dropped from every network there is.

Remember - Stereotyping and labeling a group, especially with pejorative terms, is small-minded and not tolerated. Unless, of course, the stereotyping and labeling is done by a liberal, in which case other liberals let it slide.

Personally, I bet you aren't as fat, ugly and Republican as you think. ;)

    Response is simple.

Unfortunately, Rush is a defining voice of the conservative movement. I don't believe we have the luxury to pretend we don't care. He needs to be called out for the vile things he says.

Here's one question for righties and Rush ...

Do you think that perhaps ED drugs like Viagra are covered by insurance? If Rush wants to see the sex tapes of a contraceptive-taking woman, perhaps we should also see the sex tapes of any man receiving subsidized ED drugs.

But then again, who wants to see videos of old men who can't get it up?

    Not me.

    Ewww.

I do think the campaign needs to go beyond Rush's advertisers. Premiere Radio Networks won't punish or fire Rush as long as his gullible audience continues to listen. But if advertisers threaten to avoid the whole network, that also affects guys like Jim Rome.

Limbaugh is an entertainer—a shock jock. He doesn't represent all Republicans. I know many Republicans who can't stand him.

And this moment of soft-peddling Rush's power and influence is supposed to tell us ...?

    [godwin]

I'll bet there were Nazi's that couldn't stand Hitler.

I wonder if Rush prefaced his statement by saying "I imagine she's a slut."

    Just curious.

No, not soft-peddling . . . explaining to a European. He has power and influence but represents a right-wing faction, not all Republicans.
