Retina MBP BootCamp Overclocking Results

    All I can say is WOW. The GT650m in the Retina Macbook Pro is already clocked higher than a normal GT650 at 900Core/1254Memory.

    With the stock clocks I was able to achieve a score of 2252 on 3dMark11 which is about average for this card and the 3720qm (2.6ghz) proc. The temps at stock clocks ranged from 99-105C for the CPU and 77C for the GPU.

    I wanted to see how far I can push the GPU and installed MSi afterburner. I thought that I would get about a 10% increase, and oh boy was I surprised. I spent over four hours increasing clocks a little bit at a time to make sure I had no artifacts and that temps stayed stable. By the end of my testing, I reached a software limitation, not a hardware limitation on the core clock. MSI afterburner only lets me increase the core clock by 135 and 1000 on the memory clock.


    Thanks to "Mobius 1" on Notebookreview to point out a program called NvidiaInspector for overclocking. Using the following guide, I am able to OC past the clock of 1035.

    The only difference, was that to get into P2, I had to type in nvidiaInspector.exe -forcepstate:0,1 instead of 0,2.


    I had no artifacts from increasing the core clock and only received artifacts when going to 1000 on the memory increase. 950 was perfectly fine and no artifacts. Im sure if I figure out how to pass the software limitation of MSI afterburner, the GPU can handle higher than the 135 increase for the core clock.

    My final stable overclock was 1035/1729, up from the original of 900/1254. One would think temps would go up alot with this type of overclock, but mine only went up by 1C to a max of 78C for the GPU.

    With this overclock, I was able to achieve a 3dmark11 score of 2860. This is nearly a 27% increase over the previous score and higher than a stock GTX660m. I couldnt believe how far this card can be pushed.

    If anyone has info on how to increase the core clock further than the MSI max, Id be willing to OC more (I already tried turning on unoffical overclocking) :)

    I wonder witch of the gpu or mem oc brings the higher perf increase. :confused:
    You got +15% GPU and +37% MEM for 27% score improve.

    Can you try
    stock GPU and MEM oc
    oc GPU and stock MEM

    That's something man!

    Try to find another over clocking tool without limitations and go further than that on the core, if it's so stable and cool at +135, I think we can probably go further!

    Can't wait to get mine and test how far can I get with OC on mine! :)

    Please keep updating this thread, and if you can post also some FPS in games (diablo 3, BF3, civ5, skyrim) at ultra settings and native resolution (2880x1800) would appreciate it a lot!

    I wanna see if pushing the core so hard can allow us to play decently even at that crazy panel res!

    We were already close with stock clocks, but with this much OC we can definitely achieve that, at least for diablo and similar (BF3 for sure no).

    Neither will alone give best performance there is a reason why they are locked together per default, ideally they scale together. After that it also depends on individual tests how they utilise the gpu and so on. But as a rule, increase both together and you always get the best exponential increase.

    ...dang, that is a pretty awesome performance increase.

    How does that translate into actual game framerates?

    Considering that the 650m was already overclocked to begin with, this is actually really impressive. Props to apple for putting a pretty powerful GPU in a laptop, with a rocking cooling system to boot.

    I tried with EVGA Precision,but same thing. Only a max of +135/+1000. Ive read that it might be something limited by vbios, but ill do some more research tonight.

    Will run some gaming benchmarks at stock and 1035/950 later tonight.

    Im downloading a couple benchmarks right now and will give an update hopefully by the end of the night. Im getting the FFXIV, Lost Planet 2, Mafia 2, and Resident Evil 5 benchmarks. I would do Crysis as well, but as far as I know, you cant run the benchmark if you do not have the game installed.

    I dont have the original Crysis, only Warhead and 2.

    I would like to try this, but would I void my warranty if anything happened to the GPU/logic board? I've overclocked stuff on desktops before, but never on a laptop.

    I'm assuming this is only for those rocking Windows, is it possible to do this within OSX? I'd love to test this with rendering within After Effects. I'm not a gamer, but would like some more performance!

    Maybe you can modify the VBIOS to enable permanent overclocking. It would probably require some reverse engineering and flashing of custom EFI firmware (it's usually stored in the BIOS of other laptops I think). :rolleyes:

    Would appreciate if u tried the games etc at lower res. ARound 1920x1200.

    Most people wont game at 2880x1800. And a 3 fps increase at 2880x1800. Can suddenly be a 10 fps increase or more at lower res.

    Great job. Shame the cpu gets so hot still.

    So Ive been doing some more research and it looks like the +135/+1000 limit is set by the vbios of the card itself. Pretty much every GT650M has that limit and theres no way around it other than a vbios mod, which I am not willing to do.

    I guess we will just have to deal with GTX660m speeds :rolleyes:

    Ill run some more benchmarks today at 1680x1050 and 1920x1200. I downloaded a benchmark for Crysis Warhead and am looking for some more.

    edit: Added Crysis 2 and Crysis Warhead benchmarks at 1920x1200 and 2880x1800.

    Found a way to get past 1035! Just ran 3dMark11 at 1100/1604 and hit 3046, which beats a G75 with a gtx670m and 3720qm (same proc).

    Posted how to in the guide.

    Back to benching :D

    My cousin's G75 with GTX660M was hitting 1100 core and 2000 memory and was benching around 3300-3400. Still impressive you're getting that much overclock in a such a thin chassis. The G75VW has a much quieter, and more robust cooling system, but it also weighs 11lbs! BTW, the 650/660 are kepler while the 670 is the older fermi which doesn't overclock as well as it's 40nm.

    Try to see how far can you go staying stable with core and memory, and once you find the 'sweet spot' bench the hell out of it (games, etc..). :D

    Also, a report about fan speed, temperatures, etc.... in OC and stock would be nice, so we have an idea of what to expect.

    Just got my max stable clocks. 1200/1649.

    Result was a 3248 3dmark11, about 1000 points more than stock.

    Gonna rerun the crysis 2 and crysis warhead benches now since I deleted the other ones lol.

    Temps are pretty much the same as stock clocks. CPU doesnt change, GPU went up from 77C at stock to 81C at 1200/1649. Fan speed was at 5000 RPM according to HWinfo, but it didnt sound loud at all. Just like a white noise.
