pre-emptive self-pardon? i guess one can't be above the law if the laws are that malleable and self-serving.

That's just great, now the Executive Office can do illegal and immoral things, but don't have to worry about the consequences because they can retroactively make it legal. How can the Republican party think this is okay? Don't they realize that they won't always hold power and they're just making it easier for abuse at that level. They've managed to disrupt the balance of power between the three branches.

Why don't they just crown King George and get it over with. Give the boy a scepter.

Isn't amending the War Crimes Act kind of pointless, whether retroactively or not? As signatories to the Geneva Conventions we're bound to apply them. We can't dismiss them without withdrawing, right?

Not that we'd ever brazenly take our dicks out and actually withdraw from the treaty. We'll just quitely ignore it and claim innocence.

Write to your congressman/senator and tell them not to support this.

Seriously. What in the hell is stopping us from getting impeached? Wtf is the process? I want him gone. I want him charged, and I want him hung along with the rest of his family, GOP buddies and oil tycoon friends.

This is possibly the most outrageous abuse I have ever heard of. How can anybody even contemplate such a manoeuvre? You couldn't make it up.

Not wishing to seem naïve, but are there not laws in place to stop this sort of stuff happening? It seems completely ridiculous for a current government to be able to change laws to suit themselves. Isn't there something written in to prevent this? I vaguely remember something along these lines from the hazy days of doing Politics A-level.

The Checks are just promissory notes, and the Balances show who's been paid off. It's all in the language, don't you see?

It'll never pass SCOTUS. Well, it shouldn't. The law has been pretty clear on this stuff for the past two centuries or so:

Or maybe Bush will argue (in a signing statement, no doubt) that this is a pre post facto law untouched by the Constitution.

Thank you for that. It's been awhile since I've laughed so hard I've cried. Maybe I'm just crying. You know, I can't even tell anymore.

At least your doing something about it instead of crying :D It's interesting though. I know why you laugh but I have had a lot of success in contacting Kay-Baily Hutchison. She has responded to me many times via phone, email, and the good 'ol postal service.

I've already seen Jon Kyl's standard form letter response.
