We all know that the mac pro will be amazing, and an incredibly fast computer, but what will apple claim? My bet is that the computer will be around 2x as fast for everyday use, but Steve Jobs will brand it with a crazy '8x faster' label. I hate it when he does this, and although I waited a long time for a macbook, do not find that the speed is 5x faster than the ibook g4. Any thoughts

Thats weird, I found it to be roughly that when using the Intel native version of FCP on a 2.16ghz MBP.

The 5x faster comes from specific test and don't necessarily reflect real world gain. They measure interger and floating point performance. Is the Core Duo 5x faster in certain tests? I am sure it is. Will it be 5x faster in every single application? Probably not.

Steve Jobs isn't lying, he is using those results to his advantage. If you are an informed consumer you should be able to look beyond marketing hype to find the truth. If you don't find your Macbook to be faster than the iBook, then go back to the iBook.

Chances are while it may not be 5x, you have gained speed. Are you doing things to see if it is faster? Or are you just using the OS, maybe playing some music and surfing the web? In those instances you wouldn't notice much of a difference. Why not encode some video and see which one finishes first.

Also, don't forget they put the words "Up to" in front of the 5x faster for a reason.

Yes, you do have a computer that can perform *up to* five times faster. Nobody said anything but that.

How much faster can you play MP3s anyway? Were you expecting songs to being literally playing faster than they would on your iBook? Web browsing? Well that's limited by not only your connection speed, but also the speed at which the server you are interacting with is sending you information. Try putting a big web site on your hard drive and loading it from there. It is instantaneous.

Really? Bit too much kool aide consumption here I think. It might be a freakin' dog. But even if it is, it will be held to a very high esteem like the rest of the Apple product line I suppose.

Yikes, wait for it to come out and call a spade a spade, or a diamond a diamond. I give props to Apple for trying to deliver great products, but they slip like everyone else.
