I'm a frequent Xanga user...and many people on it have .asf files that play music...

But unfortunately Safari wants to download the files each time and play them in VLC. How do i turn this off?

    get windows media player

Other than copying and pasting with VLC, the only player that can play asf right off the internet is windows own media player.

...and Windows Media Player can't play content inline either, just like VLC. So there ISN'T a way around it, unfortunately.

Humm...sorry i worded that wrong...i don't want to listen to the music...the problem is that safari downloads the .asf file to view in VLC every time i view the page. I'm looking for something like the old netscape days when you could change how every type of file is handled...so i can turn this automatic downloading off.

Stupid Safari won't let you change the file type handling settings - I don't know why Apple did this, but it forces me (and others) to put a request in to Apple if you want a particular file type handled in a standard way (for example, I had to put in a request to Apple for Safari to handle .sitx files like all other archives, since that's what they are, most of the time).
