I upgradet the recent software: iChat, QuickTime and Java yesterday, and after the reboot of the system, Safari acts dead.

Safari starts, and I can go through preferences etc, but it refuses to open the browser. I have tried double clicking on links, and I've tried to open a new page, but it refuses.

I did the upgrade with Safari running in the back.

I have tried to deleted the Home folder/Library/Preferences/com.apple.safari.plist

I have deleted the whole Safari, with every files I found, and made a frech install, however the same thing happens, it's dead..

    I run OS 10.3.3.

    I have a G3 iMac with 385MB RAM.

Hope someone can help, tnx in advance!

Have you tried repairing permissions in Disk Utility? If that fails, try running Safari in another user, which will narrow down the source of the problem depending on the result.

Yep, I've now tried both, and still the same problem. It fails to open the browser window.

I now have to use IE for Mac, and it is really not the same :(

What exactly happens when you try loading a page? Does it do nothing, unexpectedly quit, display an error etc? Also, go to Home/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/ and see if there is a file called 'Safari.crash.log'. If so, open it and see if there's any information from when the problems occured. Post any relevant information here, although I probably won't be able to make sense of it, other people might.

Unfortunately since the problem occurs with every user, it could be difficult to fix. Reinstalling the system will probably fix it if it's not too inconvenient.

If you don't want to do that, there are a lot of other browsers available instead of IE. Firefox is a popular one, which has similar features to Safari (tabbed browsing, popup blocking, good speed etc).

Hmm.. There isn't logged a crash, but I just provoced a crash now and here's the error report (usually Safari just don't load the Browser, but I can still change any preferences or view bookmarks etc, but if I click on three or four bookmarks it will crash and automatically shut down.)

Which Versions of Java and Quicktime did you install? Quicktime 6.5 was released mid December and java 1.4.2 was released the beginning of February.

A suggestion that might work is see if you can download and apply the 10.3.3 update again. This has a very small chance of fixing things, but it is definatly worth trying before reinstalling.

I installed QT 6.5 and Java 1.4.2, not sure why I installed those now, since they are so old.. Probably because I have set to default the Upgrade event thing. And the iChat upgrade was just now so I upgraded it all at once..

I really give up on this thing, I installed Firefox (Thanks HexMonkey) and found it to be as good as Safari. So until I make my boss buy me a new mac, I'll go with Firefox :)

Thanks for all your help guys! :D

unless you use video chat there is no need to upgrade to the new ichat at all. the only thing it adds is support for the newest aim client.

some upgrades are worthy and others are not. when an upgrade doesn't offer you anything more and your current version is stable as mine is then why upgrade? its like putting fresh paint on something that looks fine as is. :p
