I cleared my favicon icon cache recently and noticed that some sites no longer loaded favicons. After much checking, Safari in Panther is okay and FireFox in Tiger is okay.

I finally determined that some sites, MacRumors.com included, use 16 color (4 bit) favicons. These don't display in Safari 2.0. Sites with 256 color (8 bit) favicons display okay.

As a test, try this link:
https://www.macrumors.com/favicon.ico
in Safari 2.0 and in FireFox.

FireFox shows the icon as an image in the upper left, but the Safari page is blank. But really it's just invisible in Safari. Right (control) click in the upper left corner and you can save the (invisible) image to the desktop and open it in an image editor.

Are sites now supposed to have 8 bit favicons? Some new standard that Apple is ahead of the game on? Or is this a Safari screwup?

If the former, MacRumors (and others) needs to upgrade to an 8 bit favicon.

That explains it!
I was just asking about this here a couple of days ago.
Let's hope for a fix soon :(
