I'm new on here & was wondering if anyone could tell me anything about ScanGuard which I saw advertised for my Mac, do I need it ?.

Nope, it's malware. If you're getting popups on your Mac about it, run a scan through MalwareBytes: https://www.malwarebytes.com/mac-download/
