w00t, I am excited. It was a dreadful experience opening it as I had already thought about all the issues people are having with their 17" and the ones I had with my 15"

This is a week 20 build and it has no uneven backlighting at all. (The left corner area you see in the picture is the dark background of the wallpaper). NO WHINE, I cannot express how much better it is without the whine. The speakers are noticeably better. Heat.... it still gets hot, but nowhere NEAR the level of my old 15" MBP. The keyboard is pretty even except for that damn option key again, but it's less noticeable this time. The only real issue is the uneveness when lid is closed, but I think I can manage. I really hope I don't discover any new problems when I start using it more (only ran it 25 minutes) but I will keep you guys updated.

Looks like you've got some updates to install...

I got to play with the 17" MBP down at my AppleCentre the other day. I wants one...

    I want:

    20" iMac for my desktop
17" MBP to use on the lounge about 3m from me
blackBook to use in my bedroom about 6m away from me

3 computers for three different parts of a 1-bedroom apartment, am I mad?
The 17" MBP is definitely an awe-inspiring machine though, grunt-a-go-go.

As I look more at the display, it seems to be glossy. I really can't tell, but there is a reflection (don't remember if there was one on my old one).

What do you guys think? Or am I seeing things?

In my opinion, that's not glossy at all. It looks similar to my own 20" Cinema Display. Glossy displays have very distinct reflections - more like a mirror.

It's not glossy. The glossy ones are VERY shiny.

    your 17" is nice!

Let me know how it goes. i am debating on whether i should get MBP 17 or get a G4... and then get second generation MBP 17

You think the G4 PB 17 will hold up in value?

Argh. I'm fighting that decision. I had been planning to get a 17" MBP while in the States next month (live in Ecuador). Just struggling with whether to get that or the lowend MacBook. Problem is, looking at it objectively, everything I need a laptop for can be done on the lowest end MacBook, upgraded to 2GB.

But I want that gorgeous 17" screen and the other nicities really, really bad!

Something to consider: If you look at Apple's comparison chart and start at the lowest end MacBook, then consider every step up, it seems as though nearly every step costs more than the additional features are really worth, objectively. Apple must be making a killer profit on the higher end books!

Whatever I get, I hope to sell it here in Ecuador before I move back to the States next year. The low end MBP that costs $2000 in the States costs over $2700 here (including tax)! Then get a revision B 17". :D Any of you headed to Central or South America from the States may want to consider carrying an MBP to sell as a way to pay for part of your trip. :) :p

For me, quite portable. Honestly it's not much larger than my Al G4 15' PB.

Judging from eBay, they're steadily losing value. In January, I got a used BP17" with 2GB RAM, which was about 6 months old, for $2050. Now, those are generally going for $16-$1700, unless they have more extras.

Sold said PB to an Ecuadorian friend (not because I wanted to part with it but because he really needed it!), and someone already offered him $2200 for it. So, depends on where you are. :D

Honestly, sometimes when I glance at it it looks the same size as my old 15" MBP. In my opinion, if you don't mind lugging around the 15" then the same will probably hold true for the 17"

It says the order date was on the 9th at 2pm, and it arrived today (the 18th) at 9am. Keep in mind it takes 5-7 business days (not including weekends) to process and another day or two to ship. You should be expecting it soon.

*UPDATE* When using the 17" while plugged in (in charge mode), there is a faint whine sound still present. It's not nearly as bad as the one in the 15" and I don't think that it is strong enough to have an effect on work. Overall, everythings good so far!
