I'm a new Mac user trying to figure out the search features of Finder. When I search a folder I get inadequate results. For instance I have a folder with 30 files that each have the word "apple" in them. Yet when I search a folder for apple I only get 6 hits. What am I missing?

If it hasn't been long since you set up your Mac and migrated a large collection of files onto it, Spotlight may not have finished indexing your entire disk yet.

If it's been many days since you set up the Mac and search results are still incomplete, you can force Spotlight to reindex a particular folder or the entire disk. See Apple's support document: Spotlight: How to re-index folders or volumes.
