I've used Mail for 2.5 years since i got my mac, and i've liked it except it drives me absolutely NUTS that it doesnt show your send status when you are sending a file. I do a lot of that .Hence i started to use thunderbird because I use it on my PC as well. I love it but would switch back to mail in a heartbeat.

The question I pose is, is there a way to display the send progress/status of your messages in mail.app?

    Thanks

Select the Window > Activity Viewer menu item or press [Apple]+[0] (Apple/CMD + zero).
