Apparently, a Federal Marshall fired in mid flight on American Airlines 924 from Medellín, Colombia to Miami just hours ago. Live coverage from Miami tarmac is still speculating as to what, why, who and all. Couldn't find an article or link, yet. No confirmation of casualties, as yet.

cnn is now carrying the story here. very interesting.

i must confess, i've spotted exactly zero marshalls on planes. either they're not there or they are blending in well.

    This could be... interesting.

I've kind of gotten the impression that they didn't blend in well, at least from what I've read on various online sites. (I whouldn't know myself, since I've never been to the US).

Correction. They're now reporting that the shooting took place in the JetWay on the ground, apparently after landing in Miami. Thanks for the link, Z.

Based on the origin of the flight, if I had to guess, the marshall shot a heroine trafficker, most likely a mule who got scared.

That's where my money is going in the office pool, anyway.

Two things I never say on a flight. "Bomb" and "Hi Jack", even if my friend is named Jack.

Maybe for the best. If you tried too hard, it might look suspicious... and who knows what'd happen then.

    Edit: *snicker*

At least he's alive. Next time they should try eight bullets in the head at point-blank range.

    Edit: Whoops!

It'll turn out he's innocent. Chalk it up as a case of over-reaction leading to deadly force.

No update on the website yet... the BBC says he was arrested.

Did they cuff his corpse or something? Or did he die later on from the wounds.

So Rigoberto Alpizar had traveled from Ecuador to Miami, and was boarding a connecting flight from Medellín-Miami, bound for Orlando. That's a different than ordinary sounding name, but he was a U.S. citizen? CNN lists names, where the NY article has yet to mention one.

Looks like he had mental problems and went wacko after a fight with his wife on the plane. Sad he was killed but this is the atmosphere of fear we live in today. Perhaps the terrorist have won, Fear has been sold hand over fist by this administration. Remember people wrapping their houses for fear of a chemical attack? Whats wrong with us is that we are buying right into the fear the terrorist are selling.:(

He's apparently a Maitland resident, which is only a few miles away from where I am. Apparently, he suffered from BiPolar disorder and hadn't taken his meds. He was supposedly a very nice person, turned stupid for whatever reason.

Similar situation happened at a coffeeshop less than five miles from where I live.

A 'regular' (male, and unfortunately for him in this case, also of Middle Eastern heritage) was shot and killed when a police officer thought he was a threat.

The man was innocent and also mentally ill. :(
