Hello everybody, i have a somewhat simple question. Would it be better to buy an 15" powerbook now (I need to replace my pc since its windows and ive had it over a year) Or should i wait until the new intel powerbooks come out around June or so. I definately need it for college in September and i do a lot of multimedia stuff with cs2 and the such. Normaly i would just wait but im not sure if the Rev A intel powerbooks will be better machines than a proven powerbook now. I guess im just worried there will be too many kinks in the new ones as i doubt they will have the Rev B books out by the time schools starts. I dont need it now but if it the new powerbooks wont be that much better i wouldnt mind getting a new powerbook and throwing away my pc as it cant even run cs2 anymore.

Just buy it if you are a student, when the time comes trade it off on ebay, at most you will lose a couple hundred or so.

"I need to replace my pc since...ive had it over a year"

    ??

I've got a four year old machine, and I'm waiting at least a year more. Waiting another year won't kill you either. I think the Intel laptops will be far ahead of the current crop. Significantly faster (much more than the average "one year bump" in specs), and much battery life if Intel delivers on the new chips (I think they can). Combining Apple engineering with Intel tech, I am very confident that these new notebooks will really blow the roof off of anything we've seen to date. It's going to be a really big update when they finally come out.

You are right to be wary about buying a Rev A. There are always problems, whether its worth it or not is a decision you must make.

I was in the exact same position about 4 hours ago. I'm a major PC user/gamer, but I also had a Dell laptop as well. I decided to try the Powerbook. I've been waiting for weeks and weeks for a steal of deal on ebay, and I got one. After just a few hours of having this, I'm already in love with this thing. Like everyone says, it will be at least a year until it's worth it to buy probably the Rev B Mactel. Considering I got a 15'' Powerbook w/1.5 ghz, 1 gig memory, 80 gig harddrive w/combo drive, 4 months old looking brand new for $1,100 even, I'm in heaven right now! If you can wait, go ahead. I really couldn't wait, and with this deal, I had to pull the trigger! I'm glad I did!

Keep in mind that Intel are having terrible problems producing new chips right now. (Apple decides to go Intel, Intel falls on its face)

They've abandoned a major chip project in India, and delayed another chip due to quality control problems.

AMD are zooming to the top of the performance/quality hill.

    Everyone knows Apple is jinxed!

First it was Moto.. see what happened to them!
Next it is IBM, greater irony is the moment Apple announces its decision to move, PPC suddenly becomes all the WOW again, look at the xbox360!
Now with Apple coming over to Intel, suddenly their fabs are not producing yields as they should.. jinxed I tell you, it is all jinxed!

Either that or it is all part of Steve's plan to have Apples running on the slowest processor in the market :D

You see, it is part of a grand scheme to maintain its status as a niche player, if you stay with the top dogs, eventually everyone will hop over and make you a small fish in a big pond.

The way Apple wants to do it, it wants to be a big fish in <..> pond!

I think you should just go ahead and get a PowerBook now if you need it. Like Generik said, you could just sell it on eBay when you were ready to get an Intel PowerBook.

if you already have a decent computer, wait. if not, buy it and enjoy your Mac experience NOW.

I seriously doubt that the Mactel will come out on schedule given the recent setback of Intel's roadmap. and in principle I don't buy any first generation product.

I seriously doubt that the mactel will be so much more powerfull than the actual PB that it will actually run faster even in Rosetta mode. So if you don't mind buying (and possibly waiting for) the new software compiled for intel, i suggest that you wait for mactel PB. If not, buy now.

If your computer is only a year old, wait for the PowerBook. By waiting for the Summer time, you can get a free iPod of some sort with the Student Union Promo.

Here a competition: Guess when Apple will release an Intel box that is actually faster in most usage than an Apple/IBM box...

    My guess is 6/2007...

Id go for the PowerBook now. I'd rather have a solid machine than get something that you know might have a lot of bugs in it. Hell, I still need a mac.... So ill most likely buy a PPC.

    my purchase

i debated this but i decded to buy this hd powerbook design, they tweeked it......1st gen are gambles plus its a software switch too (2 buggy areas).......i bought a g3 pizmo which was near the last of the g3 series and have been using it upto my new 17 upon delivery.....every1 says g4 is slow, to be honest its not bad.....i used a new ibook and its overall feel was snappy like my g5 tower....yea i know gaming sucks on a mac but macs are the lastt platform developers will write a game for.....i think OSX is not going to grow much in processing needs......if its a second slower to open a app who cares.....powerbooks have every option u could beg for besides speed now wich (really is it that slow?)........my only question is will new apps 3yrs from now run on my ppc.

But, will they roll out any Intel Macs if they are slower than the current batch of products?

Even laptops have to have some compelling reason, e.g. twice the battery life, or much lighter, or faster, etc.
