This is a huge issue for me. I can't play videos reliably anymore.

It doesn't matter if it's in QuickTime X or iTunes, but after I play 2 or 3 videos, the system starts to freeze up and I get a spinning beach ball cursor.

After this happens, all videos are broken until I restart.

There's a pretty lengthy discussion going on Apple's discussion boards called 'OSX Lion + 2011 iMac 27" + Video = Freeze'

This sucks. :(

I have an iMac 27" mid 2011 Lion 10.7.2, I have suffered this video playback issue too (video pausing but audio still playing, iMac unresponsive)...

After trying numerous fixes and workarounds, the only thing that has worked to date is:

Turn OFF "Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps" in System Preferences/General

Since turning this option off, playing of videos from youtube/vimeo/BBC iPlayer/embedded video on other websites works perfectly.

edit:
This also seems to have fixed the artifacting that was occuring with icons/menubars and window borders.
