iPod Shuffle 2g Problem (help needed please)

I just picked up a 2g shuffle. I plugged it in and everything worked fine, registered it etc. I loaded a few songs on it just to be sure it worked, it did. I had an itunes playlist previouslly created, i dragged about 100 songs from the playlist to the shuffle, it looked like they copied over fine. However when i unplugged the shuffle only the first few songs that i actually dragged over from my music libray played, the others that i dragged over from a playlist did not. More importantly, now when i plug the shuffle it crashed itunes every time and will not allow even a force quit, requiring me to re-boot the entire computer (imac 24").
Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.
