I was checking the stats on my site today and found some jerk leeching my bandwidth.
Some guy is leeching an image from my site and using it as an avatar in his forum. The thing is that it image is a 1.3 MB gif of bush giving the middle finger. Bush Image Here
Why you would use a 1.3 MB image for your avatar is beyond me.
On my webspace the bush image has been replaced with a picture of ******. If you don't know who this man is be glad. It is definately NOT WORK SAFE.
Here is one thead that was found in my referrer list. Scroll down past halfway and look at the poster "nipper"

Read page 9 to see the discussion of it.

BTW this guy is using about 150 MB of transfer per day.
I'm going to put up an allowed referrer list on my site after I have fun with this guy.

edit: He changed his avatar but you can still see it here (pdf file)

I think the guy deserves it. Everytime he posts he hotlinks a huge image from my site and costs me bandwidth.

Yeah. I'm hoping that forum has a policy against offensive images in avatars so he could possibly get banned.

Do you see where it says "enter avatar url"? what he did was put http://www.images.neilayton.com/bush flickoff.gif there. After I found this out I replaced the bush image with the image of the man you saw in the thread on my website. I changed the file name of the new image to match that of the old so when the site loaded it it would load the image of the man tearing apart his anus instead of bush.

Yeah, that's how I looked at it. I wouldn't want my little brother coming across the ****** image, but the f you mate one doesn't do any harm.

Way too many of these self-love threads.

Haha yes I've done this one time. At one time, everyone tried to do this trick with a class mate, who had made it a bit TOO clear that he'd never ever ever ever wanted to see that picture again. But (I believe) no one managed to make him look at it again. Until I configured my MSN avatar as ****** (obvously, temporarily blocking everyone who was online - except for him), and started a conversation with him. Hilarious how we heard him scream on the other side of the class room.

How does one do that? I guess it's to do with the .htaccess file, but I've gone through the Apache documentation and haven't found what is was looking for. Any pointers?

And it's a nasty way of dealing with those punks :D :p

Here's how I do it with .htaccess
    Code:
    RewriteEngine on
    RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://(www\.)?permittedreferer1.com/.*$ [NC]
    RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://(www\.)?permittedreferer2.com/.*$ [NC]
    RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://(www\.)?permittedreferer3.com/.*$ [NC]

    RewriteRule .*\.(jpg|jpeg|gif|png|bmp)$ http://URLtoRedirect.com/image.jpg [R,NC]
    Options All -Indexes

Thanx a lot. I take it I can have referers that go all the way down to a specific page/script, not just a domain?

    Google! ;)
