Software Updates for Mac OS X 10.1, 10.2 and 10.3

I recently split the 32GB SSD in my iBook G3 into five partitions, have installed the following operating systems:

    • Mac OS X 10.4
    • Mac OS X 10.3
    • Mac OS X 10.2
    • Mac OS X 10.1
    • Mac OS 9.2
While I was able to update 10.4 with Software Update (screenshots 1 & 2 below), Apple ended such support for all previous systems back in July of last year.

I've downloaded everything from http://ftp.iinet.net.au/pub/apple/, my next step is to find out which of those updates to install, and in what order.

Does anyone have a machine that they installed one (or more) of these OSs on, that they then updated as far as possible, solely via Software Update, before 23rd July 2012?

If you have, could you please post screenshot(s) like the ones I've attached for 10.4? You can also get the log file in some cases, for each OS it's a little different:

    • 9.2: Select "Display Log…" from the "Update" menu in "Software Update" (screenshots 3 - 5 below)
    • 10.1: Click "Show Log…" in the "Software Update" preference pane (screenshot 6 below)
    • 10.2 & 10.3: Click "Open as Log File" in the "Installed Updates" tab of the "Software Update" preference pane (screenshots 7 & 8 below)
Once we have this information I would suggest making a sticky out of it, it may be useful to those reviving old Macs in the future.

I have a 9.2.2 system gathering dust at home and will try to post back tonight if I have time. I've set up a reminder :)

YJ (a reader) and I went through the apple downloads and came up with a list for 10.3 through trial and error. I also kept note on what software update downloaded for a clean 10.4 install. Ill post the content from my much neglected blog :p

What about the firmware updates for those who are starting out on a Sawtooth or earlier PowerPC mac? I would assume all G4's at this point and some G5's. Can you provide the links for updating the firmwares on all these machines?

    Thanks,

I don't have OS X on here so I don't know which updates are available, but the post below covers some of them. The original request was asking which updates go onto a 9.2 system through Software Update so those are the ones that I covered.

However your mention of firmware updates reminded me that I previously installed the G3 Blue and White Firmware Update 1.1. From memory this was a prerequisite before OS 9 could even be installed.

Edit: There are other updates available that don't come through Software Update, such as a QuickTime update. I don't have the version number on-hand, and I don't know whether there are any other "secret" updates besides QuickTime.

Edit 2: Hmm, thinking about it some more, my install CD is for 9.1 and it needs to go 9.1 -> 9.2.1 -> 9.2.2. I don't understand why 9.2.1 is not listed in my install log unless I installed it manually for some reason

Thank you very much. I just registered to thank you for this useful information.

Hope to find the same for Mac OS X 10.1 and 10.2.

I keep a lot of Macintosh at home (I use Apple computer for 32 years now), and need to find this in case of needing the re-installation of a complete system.

Aren't the updates named "Security Update..." always cumulative, ie you would only need to apply the latest one, which I think for Panther (10.3.9) is "Security Update 2007-008"?

Here's the application versions that I think are the latest by the way:

    iTunes
    Puma: 4.7.1
    Jaguar: 6.0.5
    Panther: 7.7.1
    Tiger (G3): 9.1.1
    Tiger (G4+): 9.2.1
    Leopard: 10.6.3

    Safari
    Jaguar: 1.0.3
    Panther: 1.3.2
    Tiger: 4.1.3
    Leopard: 5.0.6

    QuickTime
    Puma: 6.3.1
    Jaguar: 6.5.3
    Panther: 7.4
    Tiger: 7.6.4
    Leopard: 7.7

    iLife
    Puma: [original]
    Jaguar: '04
    Panther (G3): '05
    Panther (G4+): '06
    Tiger (G3): '05
    Tiger (G4+): '08
    Leopard: '09

    iWork
    Panther: '06
    Tiger: '09 (9.0.3)
    Leopard: '09 (9.0.5)
