I have a bunch of old Windows 98 MS Works .wps files that I would like to convert to a format that I can either use with iWork or on my Lion Mac. Is there a freeware Mac document converter program that I can use to (what else?) convert various document formats to other versions. Sort of like the way Switch works for so many audio files.

FileJuicer does not seem to know anything about the WPS format :-~ But MacLinkPlus or zamzar may be used to convert some MSWorks files...

You can also try Libreoffice, Neoffice or GOOO (*), they must also open WPS files even if the conversion will be far from perfect.

*) or you can download libwps : and writerperfect ( ), if you want to create a single executable which the same conversion.

Thanks both of you for the helpful replies! Osnola, I think the writerperfect is used to read Wordperfect files, according to its website description in the link you posted. I was looking to open Microsoft Works files; fortunately, NeoOffice and LibreOffice are both working, and I did use the Zamzar website, and it was very helpful, although for transferring many files, it can be a little tedious.

    Hello Diogones,
Just for note, libwpd and libwps just parse respectively the Wordperfect and Wps documents. Then writerperfect can be used by both if you want to convert the result of this parsing in a Odt document ( i.e. if you look;a=tree;f=cmdline you will find a file wps2odt.cxx )...

    document converter

You can convert MS works spread sheet file extensions to MS Office extensions as in MS works spread sheet .xlr to .xls, this does work if you have Open Office. I have done it. My iMac will open these files in Open Office also.
I didn't try it with the other MS Works Suites but I suppose the same will hold true.
