Someone needs to make the iPad 1 case for iPad 2

I mean exactly that. I loved the 1st gen case and want to see an exact replica for the iPad 2. Same material which showed prints and dirt but was easy to clean and never showed signs of wear, covered the entire iPad, and was super, super thin. I know a few company offer leather versions but they are thicker.

Has anyone heard of a company wanting to make a replica of the 1st gen case since Apple has entered the Smart Cover business?

    Thanks!

I was patient at first...but now I'm honestly getting kinda pissed that nobody is doing this...

Yes, there are similar cases, but nothing that's exactly the same. Every close model I've found has some kind of glaring problem where they decided to deviate from the original design. Idiots.

A yoobao case filled the gap for me ... it's better than the iPad1 case by Apple and made from leather.

It may sound strange, but the lack of a case for the iPad 2 that mimics the official iPad 1 case is what finally tipped me into keeping hold of my iPad 1 rather than change for the iPad 2:
I absolutely love the official iPad 1 case - I tried several cases before I settled on it (including leather ones and an Otterbox Defender) and when I finally got one it was like having a new iPad - it fits beautifully, protects it perfectly and it cleans up really easily (even if it does get grubby a bit quickly, a quick wipe with a dry cloth has it looking like new again)
On top of that it weighs next to nothing, adds virtually no bulk and makes the iPad dead easy to carry

The STM Skinny fits the bill and it's a smart cover.

Does iPad 2 not fit into the iPad 1 case? I never brought the original iPad case, but iPad 2 fits into my Belkin iPad 1 case perfectly.

Yep. I've got the original Apple case for my 1st gen iPad and frankly, it sucks. Wasn't worth anywhere near $40. I paid less for the Yoobao, which isn't much thicker but looks and feels a LOT nicer. (Though the stand is a bit flimsy and I can't believe there's no latch/strap to hold the damn front down!)

Most of the iPad cases will work fine for iPad 2, the problem is the cutouts for the cameras and what not won't be there. Also if it was a very snug design the iPad 2 may be a bit "loose" as it has slightly smaller dimensions.

The day I decide to carry my iPad in a case with "Hard Candy" scripted across the front is the day I'll decide to give up my leather portfolio and go back to the Trapper Keeper.

The material the first one is made out of looks cheap and crappy...and that's in the press shots. I can't imagine what it's like in person...

The second one is not nearly close enough to the original. Sides not covered. Fake leather. Padded. No thanks.

I'm with you on that, and we are not the only ones (several similar threads were created in this forum since the iPad 2 came out). I now have the Incase Magazine Jacket; it's a nice case, but I would still prefer the original Apple case. So far the Hard Candy came closest, but it doesn't fit as nicely and blocks the light sensor above the front camera. And no, I don't want leather or "pleather" if I can avoid it.

I don't understand why nobody is jumping on this market opportunity that Apple left wide open?

Hey guys, I just ordered a refurb iPad 1.

Should I assume that the regular Apple case is the best one? In other words, should I just order it and call it a day, or is there maybe something better out there fir the iPad 1?

    Thanks!

You do realize that the OP, along with many others prefer the very thin material of the Apple case over leather. Posting that you disagree serves absolutely no purpose, especially when you offer no compelling argument. Yes the leather cases are nice, but they stand out for different reasons. Apple's case is hands down the thinnest that also offers functionality.

FYI apple's case sold very well despite various options at retailers. I worked at an apple authorized retailer throughout 2010 and the apple case went out of stock repeatedly leaving our shelves of speck, macally, ifrogz, ottrbox, moshi, and several other brands in full supply; even into the last quarter of the year.

    And your point is?

Mine is that it isn't much of a 'case' at all, and it sure as hell isn't worth $40. You can disagree, that's my 2 cents.

I don't seem to remember my iPad 1 case being designed to do this...

I've got the Griffin Folio Slim which is as close as I could find to the iPad 1 case:

    http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/elan-folio-slim

    • Extra-slim, one-piece folio
    • Textured polyurethane outer jacket lined with soft microsuede
    • Frames your MultiTouch display, with access ports for controls, headphone jack, speaker, and rear-facing camera
    • Folds into a landscape-orientation typing or viewing stand

    Any good for you?

I don't get why people dig this design so much... I it seems as if about 90% of the foldable cases are built like this. :-/

I would love an "old fashioned" iPad 1-ish case to... only in brown leather, if that's possible. ^^

I'm looking for the same thing and this one Snugg Case seems to nearly fit the bill. Even has the sleep/wake function.

Two problems though. 1 -I can't find anyplace to buy it!! I missed my chance when it was on Amazon, and it was around $30 if I recall correctly. 2 - apparently, some of them will put the iPad to sleep if you fold the cover flat against the back (demonstrated in the first review in a video).

I've found some very similar-looking (maybe the same) cases on ebay, also with the sleep/wake function, and may just pick one of those up.

Some other similar cases available for pre-order:

    Bear Motion
    rooCASE Dual Station
rooCASE Smart Case (I love the look of this one!)

I love my Griffin Folio Élan Slim. I especially like how it doesn't look like an iPad at first glance. It seems to be very sturdy and configures itself to whatever I need it to do. I especially like having the back of the iPad protected. It's never out of the cover except for a screen cleaning.

I, as many others, loved the origianl iPad case (still do).

So which one is the closest to it right now? Or is there one, that's even better?
So far it seems to, that there are many choices which aren't quite there - be it weight, sturdiness, qualilty, etc.

Another question: Don't you think the original case could be modified in a way, so it fits the iPad 2? Add a sheet of whatever padding material to the back and adjust the holes for buttons - maybe that would even work out quite well :)
