Following their addition to Apple.com in the United States last month, Sonos speakers can now be purchased from Apple's website in several other countries.

Sonos Wi-Fi-connected PLAY:1 and PLAY:5 speakers are now available on Apple's online store in Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

Prices are set at $249 and $649 in Canada, $299 and $749 in Australia, £169 and £429 in the United Kingdom, and €229 and €579 in many other European countries. Prices may vary based on VAT and other regional taxes.

Apple is currently offering a free 3-month Apple Music gift card with the purchase of either speaker. The promotion is valid in the United States and all of the other aforementioned countries and runs until December 31.

Sonos speakers are also available at 468 physical Apple retail stores in the United States, Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. In-store purchases likewise qualify for the free 3-month Apple Music gift card.

Sonos speakers are nice but Apple music integration is a joke , the For you is the one from IOS 9 (true!) , you cannot like a song or add it to your library (to do so if you like a song you have to launch Apple music ) , and finally for some people the sonos app is not updated with the lastest radios.
A joke.

I hear you...but if you choose Apple Music from the Sonos app, you should have access to everything, including playlists. Seems to work for me.

Why does Sonos seem like a top player? What are they doing that makes their product worth buying?

I always hear people rave about them but it just seems like any other BT speaker...

I am trying out 2 Sonos devices & these are my thoughts so far:
  • The lack of AirPlay is a BIG minus for me
  • The app is much better than the Apple Remote app for iTunes
  • AppleMusic intergration could be better: doesn't support smart playlists; liking a track on Somos doesn't sync with AppleMusic; Podcast integration is poor
  • They have a good sound
  • The Sonos desktop app is ok
Other thoughts on going.

I like my Play:5 but it's overpriced. At least, I thought it was until I looked into a subwoofer for it. Now I really know what "overpriced" means.

Yes, Sonos is not cheap, but if you can swing it, you will be very happy with it...the sub is quite expensive, but it really makes a difference. I have a few of the Sonos amps powering my own speakers...and my son has the older Play:5 in his bedroom. I have no regrets about the cost...well made and has brought me hours of listening pleasure.

Perhaps we will see an acquisition by Apple....

Am I the only one that thinks its really odd that Apple is offering a "wireless" speaker system THAT DOES NOT SUPPORT AirPlay ??? Bizarre!

WTF is that all about??? I was going to buy some - but got a B&W Zeppelin instead as it works well with any AirPlay device.

The Airport Express - IIRC - has three possible functions: wi-fi hub/extender, wireless printing, or Airplay.

With the demands people put on their wi-fi, the Airport Express doesn't seem to get any traction as a hub. Maybe as an extender??? Don't really know.

Printers these days have built in wi-fi, so that's no longer a strong selling point for the Airport Express.

That leaves Airplay, for which I currently have four Airport Expresses to send music into different areas of my house. Airport Expresses aren't as reliable as I'd like with Airplay (and I'm using the newest Airport Extreme as my hub).

Anyway, I guess my point is that Airplay seems to be the last reason these days to buy an Airport Express, and now that Apple is selling Sonos - a competitor in the Airport Express/Airplay/stereo market - it tells me Apple is giving up on building the hardware for sending music around your home.

I miss that one hot minute where Apple was dipping its foot in the home stereo market with the iPod Hi-Fi. No, it wasn't the best speaker. But they were taking risks. And they were cool risks.

I think there will come a time in the not too distant future when we'll be able to control Sonos speakers direct from within the Apple Music app (like is happening with Spotify soon), maybe even from iOS system controls.

But from a technical viewpoint, I don't think this will be via Airplay.

Agreed. Wondered that when I first saw the "rumor". I would hope this is the first step to Sonos being AirPlay compatible. Sonos makes an amazing speaker. But I have been waiting on AirPlay to purchase them. I like having integration into my phone.

Now they are going to let Sonos and - cough cough - Beats do all the heaving lifting.

Thy have dual Class D amplifiers in them and that makes a big difference.

I was hoping Apple would come out with a Amazon Echo Competitor that would also be a nice whole home speaker system as well. Not sure if this means they aren't or it is not related.

When I was looking around for a speaker, I listened to the low end Sonos and it seemed to sound pretty thin to me. The sound out of it was missing a lot of substance, especially in the middle and low range. I finally decided on the Bose Soundlink 2, which while muddier sounding than the Sonos at least offers a little richness and low end to the music without being overbearing on the bass. That said, the bluetooth pairing is horrendous, and it gets confused a lot with all of the apple devices in the house. It seems to need re-pairing every time I use it. Once it has the device it's solid though, and sounds good. Seems this is a problem with all bluetooth speakers though. Maybe WiFi is better in this regard, but then why not just offer Airplay?

Honestly not sure if there's better choices in that price range right now. Maybe someday there'll be a solution that uses the airpods secret sauce for pairing and I'll look again.
