Consider investing it for the future -- or at least part of it.

I agree, if you come with some unexpected cash that you want to spend on something you don't really need. Then save some of it and treat yourself to a small present.

No thank god, otherwise i'd have to be sensible

As for the saving, im going to save part of it, but it will still leave me with around 500 quid to spend on something nice. Any particular suggestions?

wow thats pretty good going, congrats. problem is apple has peaked, and you should trade with your mind not with your heart, so i can't see myself buying apple stock at this time.

I don't know your age, nor the amount you received.

Let's say it was 2 grand and you are 20.

If you invested that amount until age 60 in an S&P500 Index Fund, you would have somewhere around 107 grand.

...and if you did this each year (2 grand per yer) you would have around a million dollars. Not bad at all.

Again, just something for you to consider.

But keep in mind that a million bucks won't go nearly as far in 40 years as it does today. At an annual inflation rate of 3%, $1,000,000 in 2046 will have the buying power of slightly less than $300,000 in today's dollars. Still a nice chunk of change, but the time value of money is an important concept that a lot of people fail to take into account.

Even 300,000 is better than nothing! ;)

As for how far money will go, that is really an interesting question/puzzle.

Not everything goes up with inflation. Techology based devices is one area that you can get more for your money today than 10, let alone 40 years ago.

For example, round 1994 I purchased a Quadra 840av with 1GB AV HD, 16MB RAM, 4MB VRAM, and CD-ROM with 16 inch Apple Trinitron display. Cost was around $5,000.

Today, a little over 10 years later, I can purchase a much more capable system such as a Mac mini with 20 inch ACD for a fraction of that cost.

Another example would be CD players. I remember the first ones costing upwards of almost $2,000. They were very basic with few functions. Today you can purchase a portable version on sale for next to nothing that has more features, better sound quality, and a more robust set of controls.

So while my $ may be worth less than it was 10 years ago, in some areas I can purchase a whole lot more with it.

hey guys, some great ideas here.

So i waited for the supposed 30th birthday products to little avail, and, decided to be sensible with the cash. I picked up a lacie 160 triple interface HD (i can finally backup!), a copy of office for mac (student edition) and spent a couple of hundred pounds buying Music, movies and some new converse. The rest will go towards travelling this summer. I was thinking south america, (inca trail etc), or maybe italy. Im' not sure, but either way should be cool.

I wonder what a million dollar can buy you in 2046..
Probably a large Big Mac Menu with coke.
