Spotlight beats Google Desktop hands down for 100% system integration alone, let alone search capabilities. Spotlight can handle several hundred different formats out of the box, wheras with Google Desktop you'll need to find the appropriate plugin for many formats, if it even exists. It also has to constantly reindex to keep itself up to date - something Spotlight needn't do with its sytem integration, since Spotlight automatically gets notified of any and all changes.

ya, the data in google desktop search can be old, so when you search a file that is deleted or altered may show up but not contain the data or be deleted. that alone is the big thing for me. it's never totally up to date.
