Sprint Offers Customers Galaxy Note 7 Trade-In for Any Other Phone

Sprint today became the first network to allow all of its Galaxy Note 7 customers to exchange their handset for any other type of smartphone.

The change in policy comes a day after a supposedly safe replacement Galaxy Note 7 apparently set alight on a U.S. passenger plane before takeoff, causing an evacuation of the aircraft.

"If a Sprint customer with a replacement Note 7 has any concerns regarding their device, we will exchange it for any other device at any Sprint retail store during the investigation window," a Sprint spokesperson told Recode.

According to Samsung, devices issued as replacements in its recall have been deemed safe because they use batteries that came from a different supplier to those that could overheat. However, reports of exploding Note 7 phones persist, which the company says it is looking into.

A Sprint representative said it is "working collaboratively with Samsung to better understand the most recent concerns regarding replacement Samsung Galaxy Note 7 smartphones".

Most carriers have encouraged their customers to exchange their first-generation Note 7 devices in exchange for either a refund or a replacement updated Note 7 handset, however Sprint is the first to allow all customers to return the replacement version as well, outside of standard return windows.

Samsung announced strong third-quarter earnings guidance to investors on Friday despite its exploding smartphone woes, thanks in part to the company's component and display panel business.

Even if this phone is recalled a second time I wouldn't be surprised if people still want the phone. Goes to show you the sad state of competition we have in the field right now. People just don't want to switch to Apple and others don't like what's currently in Android.

Smart move for Sprint. That's going to generate lots of respect and loyalty from existing customers, even those who don't have the Note 7 but can feel good about their carrier going above and beyond to do the right thing.

I can't help but think that each platform's general stickiness has a lot more to do with users' purchasing decisions for the vast majority of consumers. It isn't a lack of competition but more an abundance of preference for familiarity.

Say what you will about innovation (which is fairly subjective these days), but there doesn't seem to be a lack of competition... unless you mean the two horse OS race? But even there you have Samsung and others modding Android so it's one horse and then a bunch of other horses that all belong to one family.

I love my iPhone 7 Plus but Samsung has it beat when it comes to design and features. I personally don't like hints of lag and I want my timely updates but normal people don't care about that.
Samsung has enough money in the bank to drop the Note 7 altogether and still dominate 2017. Just watch and see where Samsung is a year from now.

I love my iPhone 7 Plus but Samsung has it beat when it comes to design and features. I personally don't like hints of lag and I want my timely updates but normal people don't care about that.

Samsung's chickens are coming home to roost. The fact that they rushed this into production to presumably "beat Apple" goes to show that they don't care about the consumer's needs, and that they are inexplicably more interested in what Apple is doing instead.

Funny how people say that Samsung will "dominate" Apple next year; well, when you flood the market with dozens of cheap crap phones (most of which are free), of course they're going to dominate. If I owned a Note 7, I would switch to the iPhone 7+. Nothing provides better real world performance. The dual speakers and water resistance are solid add ons. The dual cameras are great. 3D Touch works well with iOS10. I can go on and on.

I almost feel sad for sumsung, but yeah if their phones are putting people's lives in denger, I think they should recall all of them. I live in a house full of wood, wooden floors wooden tables, I can not just imagine what the cost would be for me if my house catches fire.

Silly trying to stick it to a fanboy comment. Samsung hasn't got it, the reason for me to give up my Apple sync'd lifestyle. There's no feature I'd say is worth even considering switching. The androids I've tried are far inferior in many aspects.

The one feature Samsung has going for it now is the ability to blow up. No thanks. I'll stick with the proven winner.

The iPhone is faster than mainstream phones. The A10 runs circles around the 821 and 820.

Sprint is the only carrier where you still cannot talk and surf at the same time. Verizon has finally address that issue with LTE. This was the main reason why I stuck with AT&T. I am still waiting for TMob to get just a little better so that I can switch to them. But Sprint right now is really the worst choice IMHO.

So if you have a bad Samsung phone on a bad network, well I feel bad for you. Hope you can leverage one of those switch offers from TMob.

However, do we have any true numbers as to how many have occurred?
(yes, one is too many, but this has happened with iPhones in the past)

We know it's usually the ones who have issues that complain and make the most noise.

I took my Note 7 (replacement version) back to AT&T last night.
They had no issue letting me exchange it for another phone outside of the 14 day return window.
They understood that I really didn't want to have a potential fire hazard in my pocket.
I still don't care for the iPhone 7, so I picked up a 6S Plus pretty cheap.
I'll wait to see what the Note 8 or iPhone 7S/8 has to offer.

If you have read any of my comments in the past, you will probably realized that I am more in the Apple 'hatter" category rather than "fanboy". In fact, my comments come from my frustration with the fact that I have been looking forward to find something that can replace my iPhone and help me get away from the Apple "ecosystem", but one way or the other Samsung ALWAYS fails to deliver. In this case in particular, with their new phone, they literally blew up my hope.

Let's keep it real. If the Note 7 did not have this exploding battery issue iPhone 7 Plus would not be selling the way it is. I would even call the Note 7 phone of the year.
But because I value speed and software updates over features I picked the iPhone 7 Plus way before this recall took place. Just keeping it real because when Samsung releases the S8 their going to bring it big time (barring any exploding issues).
After the Pixel launch I completely lost any faith in Android flagships. Google is setting up the Pixel to always have the latest version of Android with certain features that won't be available on other phones. For that reason I'm out of Android for good. No way I'm paying iPhone prices for a phone that will only see updates for 2 years.
I actually believe that Google's announcement this past Tuesday helps Apple more than the Note 7 fiasco. Google is purposely fragmenting Android and charging the same price as an iPhone.

I love my iPhone 7 Plus and plan on getting the next model but people have different requirements. Some want all that Samsung crap and bloat. I like my phones fast and reliable but people want every feature under the sun even if there is an occasional lag here and there. Just saying don't count Samsung out over one disaster. As long as Samsung throws more crap into their phones compared to the competition people will still buy their phones.
