I searched but couldn't find reference to this so apologies if it's already been talked about.

When I take my watch off my wrist, it locks immediately.

if you then unlock it, it stays unlocked as long as the screen doesn't turn off. All functions are available, including Apple Pay etc.

That sounds exactly as it should work... The screen only stays on a few seconds without manipulation anyway. Would you rather enter your password every 3 seconds whilst using it to make sure it hasn't been snatched from your hand and rushed to the nearest shop taking Apple Pay?
