Launched last November, Formative is a web mini-series created by Reddit and Google Cloud Platform that "aims to explore one defining moment in a person's life." The first seven episodes included guests such as YouTuber Casey Neistat and GoPro CEO Nick Woodman, among other various entrepreneurs.

In the final episode of the show, which launched today, the spotlight shifts to the formative moments of Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak's life. The video opens with Wozniak stating that "the garage is a myth," correcting the mythology that Apple really began in the garage of Steve Jobs' parents house. The myth angle regarding the now-historical garage is a point that Wozniak has been championing for a few years now.

"The garage is a myth, it is accurate to say we had a humble start. And when you have a humble start, and you have no money, your friends from high school are the ones doing it with you and you're in your house. We never once discussed a product in the garage, never conceived of a product, never talked about features of a product in the garage. We did them a lot of other places, but people thought we had a garage with people sitting around in it."
The rest of the six-minute video shifts to focus on Wozniak's upbringing and the influences that led him to co-founding Apple Computer with Jobs. Due to the analog-focused times, Wozniak mentioned that he never thought he could create a career out of designing for digital computers but he "stuck with it," eventually leading to his work at Hewlett Packard and transition to working for Apple full-time.

Check out all the videos in the Formative series on Reddit's YouTube channel.

Did they build anything in the garage, though?

I can imagine you would choose to talk and brainstorm in other rooms of a house, but building stuff seems like something you would want to do in a less finished part of the house... somewhere if you spill some paint or singe something, it's not a problem. Garage and unfinished basement, or other sort of workshop, seem like ideal candidates, to me.

Woz without Jobs = Programmable Universal Remote, Wheel of Oz company that shutdown in just 5 years, etc

Jobs without Oz = NeXT, iPod, iMac, iPhone, iPad.. From an almost bankrupt company to the most valuable/wealthiest company in the world.

I want Walter Isaacson to write this guy's biography.
Isaacson showed he hardly knows anything about computer history or the technical details of it in Jobs bio with all the incorrect info in there. It would be insulting to put him in charge of the bio for the guy who was more involved in the technical aspects of Apple's history.

It would be nice if he created something as radical today as he did back in those caveman 1970 years with very little money and resources. I guess he just got burned out with technology. He had maybe a good 10 year run and that is it.

What a wonderful video! It is a potent six minutes.

Woz doesn't get as much credit and recognition as he so richly deserves.

In addition to being a genius creative tripe, Woz is also a genuinely friendly person. I've had the pleasure of meeting him, and he is a humble and kind gentleman.

And what has been your radical contribution to the world/society?

BornAgainMac is not the topic of this thread - Woz is. Many accolades have flown around about Woz but the facts are that he has not had any success beyond his early work on board layout (broadly stated). He does appear to be a nice guy but clearly no Midas Touch on the tech world.

something off-topic but some how releated, if wasn't for Black community fiasco the Academy Award winners would've been those people: Kate Winslet (Big fish?), Leonardo DiCaprio (yes, winner! nothing in the world could prevent this from happening), JLaw, George Miller, Spotlight
I think those were the winners and was changed in the last minute

The people who went to Steve Jobs movie were not fans of him, did Wos went to this movie?

Woz was great at what he did and he sure is a great guy. Having said that, just about anyone who could get their way around microprocessors and board design would have been able to design the apple 1 and work with Jobs. Back then everyone , ok almost everyone, was playing with the 6502 and the z80 who came out a little later.

I know I'm going to catch some flack for this comment...

Flack? for what? for defending the heart of Apple? Steve Jobs!
Without Steve, Apple would not exist period!

Jobs was not a nice guy period. Screwing over your friends and employees is nothing to be celebrated or admired.

Woz was just the first...many followed.
If FBI decided to visit Apple under the curtains, who do you want be in charge of Apple in that moment..someone like Woz or Jobs? FBI will say Woz because Steve it's not nice guy he told its gonna strangle me if i don't get lost and starts crying :(

I'm with you on this, Jobs was not a nice guy everyone knows that... Yet he got the job done! Without him there would be no Apple and that's the only thing that really matters. I've seen my fare share of CEOs screw up so I'm a fan of Steve style. Cooks is doing a decent job and this is not surprising since Jobs cherry picked him...

Apple has made few bad decisions recently and don't really blame Tim Cook for that because after all he was hired by Steve Jobs, I just hope Tim runs the show now and if this Apple vs FBI thingy it's true..it's a step in right direction for Apple

So Apple WASN'T "The Partridge Family" of computers?

Darn you, Woz!!!

:apple:

Jobs was more of a visionary-maarketeer . Woz is the really computer genius. The problem is that Woz's computer genius stopped somewhere in the mid 80's or earlier for some reason.

I heard that Jobs does not really know how to program or build hardware. correct me if I am wrong.

Has nothing to do with anything. I never indicated that Woz should be in charge at Apple.

Do we forgive Jobs simply because he finally turned Apple around?

I stand by my statement.

Woz was the spring under Steves springboard. Without Woz, nothing today would be like it is. Please give Woz his due, your respect and your gratitude for his contributions and his contribution to Steve's greatness. He's more than earned it.

Because he didn't want to do it anymore.
