This question has been asked before but no one has really confirmed it.

I want to stream my music from my iPhone and iPad to an Apple TV (I don't have one yet) but I don't see the point of having the TV display turned on while in the process. Just for clarification the Apple TV will be connected to my Sony TV via HDMI. Then my TV connected to my speakers via AV cables. So is it possible for the music to play on my speakers while the TV is turned off?

Wont work. Your TV will shut off its audio when turned off.

It will work if you add an AV receiver in between your TV and sound system. Which I'm surprised you don't already have (perhaps you do but didn't mention it) if you've already got external speakers.

I have my Apple TV is connected via HDMI to my AV receiver, which from there has an HDMI connection to my TV for video. The audio never gets passed through to the TV as it is handled by the AV receiver and sent to speakers. Airplay from an iPad with this setup is brilliant, I highly recommend it. The Apple TV also has an optical out to accomplish the same thing for receivers without HDMI.

If you don't have an AV receiver I agree with the previous poster - the TV audio will shut off and it won't work.

I stream music to my TV all the time and worry about leaving the lamp on for x number of hours, but my Sharp Aquos has an audio only (picture mute mode). When enabled, the lamp turns off and only audio will play. You can adjust the volume with the remote, but nothing else. Maybe your TV has a similar feature?

There is a smiliar thread over at the official apple forums: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2600180?start=0&tstart=0

I wasn't even aware of this issue. For audio, I'm using a parallel optical Toslink cable (it's also recommended in the above mentioned thread) on my ATV1 since my receiver has no HDMI anyway. Works very well. My Sony TV has an infrared presence sensor which turns the image/TV off when none is present, so it would really be annoying if the sound would be turned off also all the time.

    I do it!

My Apple tv has both HDMI and Digital out puts used.

I have the Apple TV HDMI port -------- TV ( used for me to watch videos / pics etc )

    THEN

If i just want music to go through the surround sound receiver, i have AppleTV Digital Optical ------ Receiver.

I control everything by the remote app. Works nicely.

Make sure you have the latest software update for your ATV!

    Apple TV Software Update 4.4.3
    Feature Summary
Audio Output Addresses an issue in which audio may not play through the optical port when the TV is turned off.
