    I'm not sure I've come across one of these magical internet enabled disk images. All I seem to get are .dmg's which automount.

    didn't apple just switch to zip instead of stuffit with panther?

    Apple didn't really "switch" to Zip with Panther. Apple never really built StuffIt compression into the Mac OS. They just provided StuffIt Expander bundled with the operating system (as they still do with Panther). The only difference with Panther is now Apple offers built-in Zip compression, most likely because it offers cross-platform compression support.
