Microsoft today launched a new commercial for its Surface Pro 4, directly comparing the tablet computer to Apple's MacBook Air.

The ad, titled "Surface Pro 4 is the one for me", was posted on YouTube and features a woman trying out some of the features of the Surface Pro 4 and then attempting to replicate the functionality on a MacBook Air, to no avail. All the while, a melody man plays a musical keyboard and quirkily sings the praises of Microsoft's PC offering against the Apple machine, which he calls "less useful, like a hat for your cat".

The lighthearted ad plays upon the Surface Pro 4's signature features like the detachable keyboard, pen, and touchscreen, as well as the machine's relative lightness compared to the MacBook Air, which is "slower, heavier, and a bit square," sings the keyboard player. The ad ends with the tagline: "Surface does more. Just like you."

The commercial follows a similar anti-Apple theme adopted by Microsoft in recent ads, which have previously compared the iPad Pro with the Surface Pro 4, the Surface Book with the MacBook Pro, and Windows 10 with OS X.

The 12.3-inch Surface Pro 4 starts at $899 for 128GB of internal storage and 4GB of RAM, and goes up to as much as $1,799 for 256GB of internal storage and 16GB of RAM.

Comparatively, the 11-inch MacBook Air starts at $899, with 128GB of storage and 4GB of RAM, increasing to $1099 for 256GB of storage and 8GB of RAM, while the 13-inch model starts at $999 for 128GB of storage and 8GB of RAM, and rising to $1199 for 256GB of storage.

the problem with Surface Pro is that the price without keyboard is just meaningless (i pass that the pen isn't mandatory for some).
it does more than a laptop, and is more expensive than one.

The Surface also doesn't know how to sleep and wake properly (Windows 10 bugs)
The real-world battery life is truly terrible
It feels like almost nobody is making Windows apps anymore - everything feels outdated and abandoned
Surface delivers a compromised experience that delivers the worst of both world's in a very overpriced package.

Get yourself a Mac and an iPad and you'll have the very best of both world's. It should be a no-brainer for anyone.

And which of those outdated macs is the no-brainer now?

Can MS make an ad without comparing themselves to Apple?

Could Apple? For DECADES, Apple hasn't done anything else in their ad campaigns than belittling the competition. That goes back to the 1980s, when they used Charles Chaplin's "Tramp" in their ads that targeted the IBM PC and reached the height in the "Hi, I'm a PC..." campaigns.

Well, Payback's a bitch.

Yeah, sure. Just pay TWICE the price for TWO devices when you can have it all in ONE machine... That only makes sense in Apple land.

Those are the characteristics of a detachable 2-in-1

But the Macbook Air is... and has always been... a traditional laptop.

Comparison fail?

There are plenty of Windows laptops that don't have a detachable keyboard, pen or touchscreen either.

And did Microsoft forget that Macs run MacOS? That's a BIG reason people buy Macs.

Not a fan of anything that runs Windows after suffering that OS for the last 20 years, so much of my life i cannot get back fixing, repairing and babysitting that junk, i must have had Stockholm syndrome. Competition is good though and things like this will hopefully keep Apple on its toes, they need a bit of a rocket up them with the way the have been with the Mac over the last year. Hopefully they will surprise us in a month or so and make it all worth it.

Now off to fix my mates Windows 10 PC, its done some auto update and screwed it again. 4th time this year

And which of those outdated macs is the no-brainer now?

And which of those outdated Macs is still objectively a bad computer to a purchase, price aside?

The SSDs are unrivalled in speed, the OS creams Windows, the support is significantly better, the build quality is unmatched, and the CPUs in the 15" are still more powerful than almost all of the 'new gen' CPUs you commenters are crying for.

And it's likely getting refreshed by the end of the year anyway.

I'd like to know exactly what you could do with a slightly quicker CPU that you can't already do on a 15" rMBP.

Heh, the ad was amusing I thought. It's just typical marketing trying to show any perceived edge their product has over the other and to be the reason a consumer should choose it over something else. Not much different that the "Hi, I'm a Mac" ads Apple ran a number of years ago.

I'd certainly consider a Surface Pro the next time I'm looking for a tablet to replace my iPad Mini, but not so much if I wanted to replace my MacBook Pro (I don't think). I use and like both platforms and they each have their strengths and weaknesses for my usage.

At the end of the day, get what works for you and makes you happy.
