Hey guys I was just wondering if you have ever taken your desktop to a local Starbucks or some other place with free wifi? I was just thinking that maybe my cousin and I are the only ones crazy like that. Last Christmas break we took his Powermac G5 and Mitsubishi Diamondtron CRT and my eMac to a local Panera Bread. Let me tell you, the computers fitted in quite nicely on one of those high tables. We placed the G5 closest to the window and you could see the Apple sign from outside. Beautiful. I think I have some video footage somewhere that I still have to edit. I might post it sometime. Good thing they have free coffee and tea refills at Panera Bread. Now, next time we might take dual monitors. I think it looks a little more professional.

I wouldn't even consider doing that with something larger than my iMac. What possessed you to lug your PM in there? :p

Oh, BTW, what's Panera's policy WRT using their internet?

FREE WIFI (you see we are terribly poor) and people's reaction were the main driving force behind our lugging

    Get a job you hippie!

    :D

Having a laptop sort of deems it a little over the top for me to even consider taking my iMac out in public. What, especially with all this talk of terrorism, imagine if it got hurt!

I think you're full of it, but hey--more power to you!
And no I buy laptops so I don't have to lug CRTs and PMG5s around.

Oh we took care of the photographic proof alright. Oh Jessica, didn't your mommy ever teach you that if you don't have anything nice to say then don't say anything at all, so if you can't say anything informative, interesting or otherwise intelligent then stay of the boards. Thank you, have a good day.

Ok let me clear all of this up. The PM is not mine, it's my cousin's and let me tell you he worked a lot for it. Also where I live the cheapest high speed connection is still $35, which I think is a rip of, soooo...

Wow! You called me on this one, didn't think you were actually being serious! I bow down to you good sir.

And easy on jessica, she was only showing a healthy dose of skepticism.

could the OP (or someone else) attach the images here? the geocities thing seems to have gone over its bandwidth limit. that sounds like a really cool thing to do--what'd the management/employees think? :D

Well, before bringing in our computers we asked one of the employees about their rules and regulation on wi-fi use. She said you sorta bring your computer in and use the wi-fi, the point is she didn't say no desktops.

At first when we brought in the desktops nobody said anything. Then when we went to get some tea, the manager came up and asked us what we are doing, for interest. We just told him we were using the wi-fi. He asked if it was for gaming and we told him we didn't plan to game. His reply was that he would never bring in his PC unless it was for gaming. :D

I think this is a great idea!

You just need to organize more of the Mac people in your area and set up a regular meeting night every month or so. lol

30-40 Macs in a Panera Bread. Brilliant!!!!!!!!

Hmm...seems kinda odd to bring your desktop for free wifi. What was the goal of doing this?

How long did you stay at the Panera Bread? By the way, your site with the pics is down. :(

I swear to God if I ever see someone take a Power Mac G5 into the Panera in town, I'm going to walk in after them, stab them in the face, and then walk out of Panera with a Power Mac G5.
