Apple employee #35, also known as Jef Raskin, named the project the McIntosh after his favourite brand of Apple. He later changed it to Macintosh as there was a copyright issue with some audio gear of the same name.

my understanding is that it's because Jobs spent time on an apple-orchard commune for a while, which is where his girlfriend and daughter (lisa) wound up staying after they separated. For a couple of years, everything steve did involved apples and that orchard, so that's where it came from.

i believe this is the story given in "The Little Kingdom: The Private Story of Apple Computer" by Michael Morris.

I'm an infallible historian. Apple Computer was named after Gwyneth Paltrow's baby, "Apple".

And Macintosh was chosen because it is an acronym for MAC (Media Access Control) INT (Intelligent Network Toy) OS (Operating System) H (Ha!).

By the way, I'm very sensitive so don't tell me if I'm somehow mistaken. ;)
