    Hello,
I have had a really old Dell 450/ME sitting on my bedroom floor for the past 6 months and I really want to do something with it. Ideally I would put Windows 3.1 on it just for old times' sake (My first computer had 3.1...) however I can't seem to get it to recognize the hard disk and can't ascertain the problem. So, I'm open to suggestions. What fun, creative, or just weird things can you think of to do with this machine? "Smash it with a hammer" and things like that don't count. ;)

    Folding good choice,

May I also suggest catapult or trebechut fodder? Gives you an excuse to build one out of PVC pipe.

I seriously doubt you could overclock a Dell (or HP, Compaq, ect.) because the multipliers and FSB are locked in the mother board. Companies typically lock their mobos because you could buy something like an eMac, and overclock it to a PowerMac G4 or PowerBook speed. That would result in loss of profit for the company. Of course, some mother boards are unlocked, but today that is pretty rare. You could also maybe try to overclock it with pins, but I don't know about that.

As for the Dell, I'd use it for folding at home, use it as a web server, and put more hard drives in it and use it a music server thing or whatever they're called.

well i've been to a restaurant and it had a really old mac, it worked, and they used it for suggestions and menus for the costumers...it just stood there in the middle of the restaurant sayin' 'click here', and when you did it showed the menu....maybe that can bring you any ideas? use it as a post it? calendar?a crappy screensaver? it will look very retro

or make a nice real fishtank? and you can make crappy jokes like 'finally a nice windows to look at' , or 'it's a new windows, this one doesn't leak' :D

If it still works (win 3.1 is the problem as opposed to a hardware problem), then you could consider donating it to someone.

Awwww...I was so excited until I read that. :( I was going to suggest something with explosives, but...

Put *BSD or Linux on it and have fun with it. Run Folding and/or SETI.

I thought about folding...but it's only 50mhz...I doubt it would be worth much there.
