test to mp3 format

I'm looking for good suggestions to convert test into mp3 format to play back on ipod or the computer for a blind person to be able to listen to word docs an other text files. Just wondering if anyone is doing this on a their mac an can suggest a good program free or low cost I am willing to pay a little for this but just want something that someone is using now that knows it will work with out too many problems.

It's not brilliant, but you could use the Service Menu to Speak Selection, and then capture it back in Garageband or something similar. Getting it to iTunes from there should be quite simple. Unfortunately, you'd be capturing other noises at the same time.
