CNN had a webpoll up the other day asking if evacuated US citizens should reimburse the US gov't for the "favor". iirc, it was about 60% in favor.

I read in an article yesterday that they're charging them $150. It's apparently a byproduct of a relatively recent law...no one wants to charge them, but it appears that they're required to.

" OK sir, that will be $150 for the boat trip. Of course if we could protect you by sending a multimillion dollar cruise missile in to a group of tents in the desert, that of course would be gratis."

What is it that these people (the U.S. citizens, I mean) are doing in Lebanon in the first place?

If they are there on U.S. government business, sure, I agree that we have a responsibility to get them out safely. But I'm not quite sure I understand why it's the government's job to rescue U.S. citizens who have -- for whatever reason -- decided to live and work in a foreign country.

I believe a fair % work or are students at AUB (American University of Beirut).

The University is quite an Institution - though current events add a certain irony.

Did you ever consider they may be vacationing and/or visiting with family?

It's not like Lebanon is some backwater hellhole. At least it wasn't last week.

I've heard stories of those visiting family members there getting stuck. The Canadians that were killed there were doing that I believe. I hope you aren't trying to suggest they're terrorist sympathizers. ;)
