According to this, an Australian gamer has bought a virtual island for $26,500.

Apparently, it's been viewed as an investment...

    WHAT THE F.

That's insanity. I'd never even heard of that game. Guess I'd rather buy REAL property...

i think the idea is to sell property, not buy it.

he's "investing" his money...better than the lottery, i guess...

A fake island existing in cyberspace.

    Been done before...

    Dominion of Melchizedek

    Big business in fake nations.

At least this time the virtual island has a legitimate beginning. :p

But there is only 200,000 users registered for that game. He would have to accumulate $200 from each user to match what he put in. He could do it over the course of years but the game will drop users over time and take longer and longer to aquire that amount.

There are to many nerds out there with to much money.

    200,000 * $200 = 40 million bucks!

    Am I missing something?

i can see how this game could be addictive. I've looked around on their (terribly slow) website, and found a few fan sites...Pretty involved. And some nice payouts for some people. Imagine in WoW if, when you kill a troll or something, you actually get real money...and if you get killed, you lose whatever you had on you...which is worth real money.

It's like Everquest for people who play poker with real money.

(which isn't me, because I suck at poker)
