But this film is Bond how he's supposed to be. The gadgets and plots have gotten just plain silly over the years to the point that even I as a die-hard Bond fanatic, didn't really enjoy the last two movies. Die Another Day with its frickin' space laser, surfing and parasailing just made it a bit cartoonish - and Bond is NOT supposed become a cliché of himself, which has happened over the years.

Casino Royale is firmly routed in reality, and as much as I like my gadgets, I appreciate it all the more. Brilliant film - only saw it this evening!

I admit the last couple of films have been poor. They've gone down since Goldeneye big time. I guess everyone can have their own view on what Bond is supposed to be. He's been different from the books pretty much since the beginning so there's always been the film Bond and the book Bond. Personally I like a bit more fantasy. I kept waiting for him to go and actually stop some terrorists from doing something aweful. It didn't have to be unrealistic, just something better than stopping however many millions from falling into terrorist hands.
I liked the darker Bond too, I liked Timothy Dalton's Bond a lot because of his darker nature. Its not the new Bond I don't like, its the story he was in. A *few* gadgets would have been nice and a more dramatic story for him would have been good. Next time maybe though, it did feel a bit like this film was just setting the scene a bit.

A great relief from the silly Bond image that has been conjured up in my head for the past couple of years.
A great flick, a great actor, and what lines, what lines! Absolutely brilliant.
And man, is Eva Green hot.

A thoroughly enjoyable experience. I might have to watch it again.

Worst james Bond ever!

While I agree that it was by far not the greatest of Bond films, what didn't you like about it?

I read up a bit on the next bond film and apparently its meant to be a sequel to this one where Bond basically goes and takes out the terrorists. Maybe they can redeem themselves with that. Stopping terrorists blowing something really big and important up could be 'gritty' enough for all the critics while actually putting in enough action and James Bond fun that we all know and love.

Well, the modern Q wouldn't have made a good match to the edge of this film I agree, but I'm not a fan of the kitted up Aston. I think the point of Bond cars are stock looking exotic cars with weaponry added under the skin.

This Aston had all the badass on the outside, and a first aid kit on the inside. I do like how they used it in the film though. That was a nice touch.

I thought it was perfect. For me, it works because Mi6 gave Bond a super exotic sports car, but only because that's likely what a guy who could afford to be in a ten million dollar buy-in poker game would drive. It didn't need rockets or <snicker>invisibility</snicker>, it just needed a nice little silenced pistol, and a first aid kit just in case. They were worked into the dash with utter taste, if I do say so myself.

While I agree that it was by far not the greatest of Bond films, what didn't you like about it?

Again, too much is not a good thing for this franchise in my opinion. Like others have said, we don't want Bond to become a caricature of himself.

For this film, I loved the fact that some of the most intense parts of the story took place in one room of a casino. Well, that and the scrote-torture. Not to mention le Chiffre was the consummate Bond villain. The dude was a freaking banker! Of course - a hyper-evil, sadistic banker, but a banker nonetheless.

Of course, to each his own. Fortunately, there are several of Bond flicks, each with their own style and feel.

For me, this is about as perfect as the films could be. Hopefully the directors, producers, and cast will stay the course.

good lord man, what about Sienna Miller? :D

*pushes iBlue into a cold shower*

:D

yeah really. know that episode of Friends where Ross and Rachel have celebrity lists? ;) Yeah, he's on mine and topped it after seeing him as Bond. :D

Aaaaaanyway...

I thought he made a fantastic Bond because it was more believable. I agree very much about how Bond became a cliche of himself over the years. This recent film really seemed to solve that. Brilliant!

That photo is so eff'ing cool that you really can't dislike Craig now. After all, the complaints about him being Bond before had nothing to do with him as an actor or a man. Some people are just shallow and don't think he's as good looking as Brosnan, Connery, Dalton, or......"that other guy." ;)

Women and gay men aren't the only ones going to see it, y'know. :p I don't care if he's the most handsome guy in the world as long as he was decent looking and wearing a cool suit (check and check). He just has to be cooler than us, and he's Bond, so he will be. :)

Oh, and "Casino Royale" is a cool name. It sounds like a name that has already been used for a Bond film, but apparently it hasn't, so here we are. Bring it.

I'm new here, my apologies if this was already said:
The title Casino Royale was actually a 007 movie BUT was out of the official chronology of the series, and it was the first too. So, here we are, forty years later with the same title but with a new argument and a new Bond. Gotta admit, i didn't like the guy before. But once i saw the movie, it really like me. Nothing like Brosnan, but i don't think that's a bad thing. It's just different. No more crazy gadgets all over the place.
It reminds me when Travolta says on Swordfish: "You know what the problem with Hollywood is? They make sh*t, unbelievable, unremarkable sh*t". This is certainly true, and that's why this movie is more real, less flashy and more "real world" actions (except the chase with the black guy :D)

late to join this discussion

sorry I'm late - it's tough to get to the movies.

I just saw the movie and I thought it was really good. Previous Bond movies (cough, cough, Moonraker, cough, cough) were more like cartoons. This was a great action flick with pretty good character development. Daniel Craig was a great choice: more laid back, gritty, and a credible bad ass. If you ignore the previous Bond movies (which was kind of the intent of this movie) and treat this as a first movie of a series wouldn't you be excited for more?

Sorry if the Bond fan-boys didn't like messing with an icon. I initially didn't think that it was a great idea to change to movies so much - but after seeing the finished product I now think that it was brilliant.

It's a bit late but...

I finally watched 'Casino Royale' last night after my brother borrowed the DVD from a work colleague: it was okay. Nothing more, nothing less.

The 'parkour' opening sequence was well done and Bond had some funny lines, but it was too long and it had far too many product advertisements ('Rolex?", "Omega." ).

Daniel Craig looked fantastic in that scene - if you listened carefully you could hear the sound of bikini straps snapping open from twenty paces away and men sucking in their stomachs! ;)

The 'torture' scene was particularly nasty - lot's of grimacing and wincing here!

But still, it left me a little meh!

Looking for Lucy Butler
Also a little late,,,

I recently saw it as a Netflix rental. Liked it, glad to see the producers finally come to their senses with how a Bond picture should be. And yes, Daniel Craig is a fine choice to play Bond.

Best part about "Die another Day": The scenes of Halle Berry in that bikini. :D
Worst part: The rest of the movie.

I'm glad that after 20-odd James Bond films spanning decades they finally hit what you think a Bond film should be like ;)

Have I said already? I hated this film. I was crossing my fingers hoping for the ending, but no! They just had to prolong it some more. A shadow of previous James Bond films. They're really 'Americanising' it.
And I'm a fan of DC.

Oh how I love it when threads get brought back.

One of my favorite bond movies. But I also happen to love Eva Green and rate Daniel Craig as one of my favorite actors, so the real test is the next bond movie when Eva Green isn't in it, then we'll see how good Craig is as Bond.

Wow this thread is old.

Anyways best Bond film in a long time. Way better than any of the Brosnan films or anything.

Daniel Craig is the best Bond since Connery.

And last but definitely not least, Eva Green is extremely hot.

Best Bond Movie Ever!! Reallly good all around movie. I actually havent seen too many Daniel Craig movies (only one that comes to mind is Munich, but from what i remember he had a pretty small role..) but this movie really shows that he could be a damn good actor.

I'm also real happy i can watch a Bond movie without cringing at the bad story/direction/acting (Denise Richards as some kind of scientist, if i remember correctly......come on now. Albeit she was pretty hot)/plot holes/script/...i could go on.

Now that i think about it, this movie musta been damn good for people to have resurrected this thread about a year after the movies release.....
