We've got an on-and-off ant problem at our house, and it got me wondering. What could happen if an ant crawled his way through one of my iMac G4's air holes? Is there any danger besides the smell of fried ant?

Yeah there might be a danger. He might short the circuits and render your iMac effectively dead.

I don't think you have anything to worry about. Depending on what type of ants they are anyways. If it's sugar ants (small, non biteing fast ones) you have nothing to worry about. If it's the outdoor ones (biteing ones and a bit bigger) they tend to eat cables and destory them over time. I don't know how many times sprint as been to my house repairing the green box outside :) It has been built full of ants inside and we have lost all phone connections.

Just buy some indoor ant spray and spray your bedroom along the base/wall. I spray my house every year and never have any bug problems. You buy the stuff in a small pack and you mix it in a 2.5 gallon spray tank with hot water. Says to spray every 6 months, but it works for a year :)

I've had the occasional ant crawl out from under my iBook's keyboard a minute or two after I wake it up...never caused me any problems.

LMAO.. I would be a bit worried then :) BUY INDOOR ANT KILLER! You buy the pack and sprayer for under $50. I don't think you can rebuy your imac that cheap.

Not sure if ants would damage your iMac G4 or not...regardless, its time to pick up some pesticide.

Imagine being that ant in that computer? Or in an iBook. That would be so awesome.

Except for the part where you get a little too close to the PowerPC G4 processor and get burnt to a crisp. ;) :D

I was reading this web page when I saw this thread, so forgive me for thinking it was about a different kind of "Ant"! :)

I've found a stray ant (the non-software kind) crawling on the table near my computer a few times, so I crossed my fingers and hoped they hadn't been visiting the inside of my Mac. If there had been a real ant trail going past the computer, I probably would have panicked.

Ha, wrong type of ant! :)

Where there is one ant, there is bound to be more... ;)

    And for good reason. ;)

Just like the hundreds of stupid henchmen, none of whom can shoot straight, in a James Bond film, right? Nice user name! :)

If I really did find an ant trail, I would either call the British Secret Service to come and blast them all with laser guides missiles, or I'd blow them away with air and then eliminate any reason for them to pass that way. Perhaps the crumbs from that cinnamon roll don't belong on top of my Mac after all.

I wouldn't spray bug repellent near a computer.

    Exactly. :)

Thanks! :) Doctor Q is a great user name as well. :)

The most logical solution, naturally. :D

No, that is probably not helping matters out. ;)

Good call- could lead to more harm than good...

I think they're just the regular small sugar-eating indoor ants. I've only seen one by my computer so far, and it was, erm, eliminated...rapidly. We did just get some ant spray a few days ago, so I'll get around to using it pretty soon.

    ANT KILLER! ;)

Actually, if it was poking around your precious Macintosh, it deserved "extermination". :)

Better to be safe than sorry- prevent any more little pests from pestering you.
