I've been making alot of custom wallpapers recently, and I was just wondering, what are the "major" desktop resolutions that I should be targeting?

Obviously, 800x600 and 1024x768, but what above that?

    For standard ratio displays:
    800x600
    1024x768
    1280x1024
    1600x1200

    Other:
    1280x854
    1440x900
    1680x1050
    1920x1200
    2560x1600  :p

Yeah I've posted about 10 or 11 of them before.

Well, that's kind of why I'm asking about the resolutions...

...because I was thinking of submitting them to various sites, or something like that.

None of my wallpapers are particularly original, just pre-existing elements blended together.

well they are original in that you took these different elements, and were able to combine them into something new and different than what would have been made of them otherwise :D

and be sure to let us know what sites you submit your wallpapers to so we can go and gobble them up, i personally like Interfacelift.com (aka xicons.com) and MacDesktops

    i hate to nit-pick, even though i often do, but 1280x1024 is not 4:3, it's 4:3.2
1280x960 is actually 4:3 but almost noone makes 1280x960 screens that i know of. i noticed this on my old 1024x768 screen when i took a 1280x1024 background and stretched it and it went out of proportion, but then i took that same one in 1280x960 and it was fine. but back on topic, for windows users 1280x768 and 1400x1050 are common, as is 1152x864.

Yeah I know, but as you say, 1280x1024 has somehow become the standard over 1280x960. Weird.

    Some nice desktop wallpaper. :)

    Standards:
    800x600
    1024x768
    1440x900

As long as its along those measurements it should be fine. Resolution 300 dpi or higher (unless space is an issue). :)

    800x600
    1024x768
    1280x960
1280x1024, this is what i have mine set at.

    ...and so on...

This is a nice visual template of monitor resolutions generally for mac on one image.
    http://desktop.dvdesign.com/dl/DVDScaleTemplateV6.gif

Also, I think including 1600x1200 is a good idea. Those that use resolutions like 1600x1200 hate finding a picture they like that's only in 800x600 or 1024x768. I guess noone really makes desktops that are larger than the monitor they themselves own. Also, having 1600x1200 lets those people with lower resolutions still have the ability to resize without the image becoming crap like enlarging an image does.

especially true now that it's not a performance issue anymore - it can be effortlessly scaled back "on the fly" even if it were a lot bigger.

3200x2400 anyone? :) i also think including a widescreen version would be nice. the powerbook resolution 1280x854 images look nice on a 720p hdtv projector, too.

Something I just threw together in about 20 minutes:

I like the second draft, however, more.

    A friend suggested more lighting.
