So, Poker (specifically Texas Hold'em) is really becoming popular. I think two things sort of sparked the recent interest.

World Poker Tour is a new tv series that televises high-stakes poker tournaments around the world. It's just starting its second season.

Also, the 2003 World Series of Poker was widely televised last year... and a relative amateur won it all.

I personally got into it with some friends when we went to Las Vegas on a recent trip (Jan). Anyone else playing?

I've been involved in a regular low-stakes poker game for years. Because of the World Series and other televised poker, we've started playing a version of hold 'em appropriate for cheapskates like us. Instead of a "no-limit" game, you simply agree on the maximum stakes for each player in advance of each hand. For example, in our game, you can bid anything up to $5, at any time during a hand (compared to our usual $1 maximum raise). But after you're in for $5, that's it--that's your stake for that round. You still get the drama of "all in," but you don't go broke if you lose. By the end of the night (after a few beers), we might bump that amount to $10 or so--a little more "dangerous," but still pretty low stakes.

I started playing about 3 or four years ago, in high school, we'd buy in 20 bucks and play with 50 cent chips...freshman year of college, i got a bunch of people here interested in playing hold 'em, with a 10 dollar buy-in, and this year i brought up my card table and things have gotten out of control, where some of my friends are playing 5 or 6 times a week, buying in anywhere from 5 to 15 dollars playing no limit hold 'em. we also played in a few frat hold 'em tournaments, with the final table of 8 having 4 people from my house represented at it, and walking away with 3/4 of the pot money.

so yeah, we play a bit. :p

me and my mates played a lot last year... but we've picked up a new hobby so we hardly play poker anymore. we now play japanese mahjong.

the problem with our poker games was that most of us played too straight up. it got a bit predictable...

I play every month or so with about eight friends. £10 in, winner takes the pot. Some other friends of mine have started a twice yearly tournament.

There's nothing like being in the last two in the game then walking off with the cash. But I'm not the luckiest player, and I can't shuffle for toffee.

Will a poker room be coming to! :p

    Mac client?

I haven't found any poker site that supports Macs. I've been trying Party Poker, Empire Poker,Multi Poker etc. But all of them are PC-only and requires you to download a client exe-file.

I've dabbled in a bit of friendly poker with pals and suite-mates. We have a 4 cent a chip buy in, so we're talking big money here. I always lose. Always. I've realized that this is because I try to do well only with good hands, which is probably not a wise strategy. I haven't played in months, but I might try modifying my game if I get back into it.

hold 'em is a great game. i play pretty regularly with some neighbors...not big stakes...just a 20$ buy-in.

my father was a big gambler...i thought every kid learned to play poker, black jack and shoot craps before the age of 8...

Oh GOD how I love poker. I have been playing daily for like 2 months now. After school, we play at my friends house. On weekends, we drive to an 18+ casino and play at the tables (yes, im 15, but most people in there look 12).

I have won 140$ in Hold Em at the casino, and 80 in blackjack. We have poker night at this guys house every wednesday and about 20 people show up. Its great. We have 4 tables with 5 per table, and the winners all play one game for it all.

Today I played and I got 2 fullhouses in a row, it was sweet. I believe they were 5s over 7s, and Ks over 9s.

I think im going to buy a set of real nice chips on eBay. The 10.5g (or is it 11.5) chips. They sell for like 80$ for a nice set.

Poker is so fun. I can play it all day (if i have enough money).

Whats the best hand you've ever had? I think mine was a 4 of a kind (7s)

I was VERY close to a royal flush once. I had A, J, suited, and a K, 10, and some other card came out (the K, 10 were suited with the A, J). The Q never came up, but thats as close as I have gotten.

    A good poker website is

I read a poker book, and I am an aggressive maniac player. I play good bluffs, but usually never back down. I bet the same with all hands until after the river. We should have a macrumors game on

    my name is jcarian.

me and some buds play frequently, they bought a bunch of chips off ebay that are really nice for about $100, and we have a nice table setup too. It's good fun, about a $5 buy in for a night of fun, great times.

I agree the World Series is getting bigger every year, I am glad too, poker is a great game.
