My friend sent this to me, not sure where he found it at. It's on of those stories where you think it can't get any worse and it does. The site loads slow (not sure if uncompressed images or just lots of traffic). Either way it's worth the read, I've never seen anything like it.

I saw that in the paper when it first happened, a drunk driver able to take out 17 cars before he was stopped.

Luckily he didn't go nuts at a street fair.

The pictures do take forever. In case people want the text before they spend the time waiting for the download (in essense, the pictures show wrecked cars), here it is:

    ------------------------------------

I bought a car yesterday! Then, I drove home and parked right outside
my apartment. Later, I decided to go grocery shopping.

When I returned, to my dismay, someone had taken my parking spot.

    Begrudgingly, I parked somewhere else.

Then, around 2:00 AM, I was awoken by a loud rumbling sound, followed
by a crash. It happened again, and again, and again...

I went outside, and this is what I found...

    Mission Boulevard was flooding...

...a fire hydrant had been knocked over.

Further down the street, I saw this car.

And a big mess in front of this flower shop.

On the same street, I saw this car with the rear windshield resting on the trunk.

I followed the damage onto Bayard St., where I live.

I saw this car about 15 feet behind my apartment.

The car looked like it had been rammed several times.

This tire was on the ground; I think it was from the driver's car.

From here started a deep groove cut into the ground. The driver was on his rim.
    I followed the trail.

This is my apartment. I had parked here earlier.
The white car that had taken my spot was gone.

As was the red car in front of it.

I found them both in my neighbor's driveway.

This was the car that had been in my parking spot.

I followed the trail down Bayard St. It smelled like gasoline.

Next, I went down Tourmaline street. All of these cars were hit, and there was a line from the driver's rim running by each car.

I followed through these barriers downhill.

I finally found the car responsible for all of this.

I found out later that the hole in his windshield was from his dog that had
been in the passenger seat. We couldn't find it after the accident.

    The verdict?

One fire hydrant, one flower shop, one dog, and nineteen cars, not
including his own (I omitted pictures of four cars with minor damage).

The driver, I found out later, was drunk, from Texas, and had only one arm.

At this point, I tried to go back to sleep.

this seems familiar, but I can't figure out where this was.. most of the plates seem to be from CA. Im thinking it was UC Santa Barbara, but that was a teenage kid, FWIR.

Whew, that was a slow load. It was worth it. In case anyone doesn't want to wait, here's a mirror. I used iPhoto to quickly take the photos down to about 1/10 their original size.

    The horror

maybe breathalizers in every vehicle aren't a bad solution.

my friend got a DUI and they hardwired this thing to her car. bascially she has to breathe in it at random times and if she blows so much the car shuts off. pretty slick. it sucks for her but its for her own good.

Sounds like an 'Invasion of Privacy'. Just because it has happened before, let's do something to try and prevent it's happening again.

Kind of like terrorists sneaking bombs onto trains or using planes as guided missiles.

I apologize for the sarcasm, but some people don't get public safety as a valid argument.

Driving is a privilege not a right.

She probably had the option: Get the blowy thingy or lose your license!

If they put one in her house to see if she ever drank, then it would be a violation of her privacy. She has the right to get drunk, just not to drink and then drive!

Seems more and more people are confusing the terms 'privilege' and 'right.' :)

With the comparison you made about public safety it sounds like you would then advocate breathalizer for all cars regardless of past driver history. Just as blanket security measures treat every one as potential terrorists, then everyone would be treated as repeat DUI-ers.

With that much damage, it would seem that he would be ineligible to ever obtain car insurance. That is certainly the worst that I've ever heard.

I agree with iJon, there is no way that I would blow into the car breathalyzer unless I was driving. Most sane individuals value their life. Anyone that would should get punished for her crime also.

Speaking as an emergency health care worker who has seen WAY to many innocent deaths as a result of drunk driving... whoever does it (the drunk driving) should have ALL privileges removed.... eating, breathing, walking, etc.

Drunk drivers are right at the bottom of the scum tank along with any other loser whose selfish actions result in tragedy to an innocent persons life. They get whatever they deserve, and deserve more than they get.

I always thought they should be allowed to keep a license as long as they...

    1. sign the organ donor cards
    2. use a motorcycle
    3. NOT wear a helmet

you know what is amusing ? in austria you have to sign a "card" if you _don't_ want to spend organs... if you don't have one of these cards ... they take whatever works in your body ;)
so in austria you can skip step 1
    and start with

    2.use a motorcycle

It can. This guy didn't kill anyone. I saw a similar incident when I lived in Chicago about 15 years ago. The main difference was only about 6 cars were totaled and the guy was never caught.
